Need advice about the dress!!

hannah-miles, 20 June, 2014 at 11:50 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi all!!

Panic is taking over me. My wedding is at the end of October and I am still looking for my dress..

I don't want to buy dress straight from the rack. I want it to be custom made but unfortunately did not think that dress making will take like 8-9 months.

Please, if someone knows a boutique in London who can make dress in like 2-3 months, I would be more then gratefull for advice.

I cant help but didnt want to read and run. It will all work out, try not to panic, make a few calls and see if any dressmakers can do this for you in the time you have left. If not then perhaps you should start looking in some shops as a back up. Or how about finding a dress off the rail and then get some changes to it? x

I used The Couture Company, Birmingham.

By the time they ordered in the fabric, it took them about 3 months to make it. If you don't need special lace ordered etc, I assume they can go straight to making.

It's not London, but I don't live in Birmingham either, and the travel time from my home to Bham would be the same as yours, assuming you live in London. Hence the reason I mentioned it.

Hope you find one in London hun, as 4 train trips for consultation / fittings is not ideal.

btw, what have you got against 'off the rack' ? There may be many many gorgeous dresses available, and you would go through fittings at the bridal shop, just as you would if it was ordered in for you. It's not actually any different from the other dresses, and does become custom made to fit you, in a similar way. The only reason I went couture is that I wanted a specific style of off-the-shoulder sweetheart neckline, but then with sleeves to the elbow, which just wasn't available in the shops anywhere!!! (I did spend months and months looking through every single dress on every single brand / designers websites, with no luck).

I'm in a bit of a dress pickle at the moment, having gone off my dress (was chosen last year). I am going to visit my bridal boutique and they will show me modifications/alterations that can be made to chang ethe look a bit. You might be able to buy one with the basicas of what you want, then have it tailored to suit you - just an idea x

Don't panic - I got my dress made in 2 months, so it's possible!

Do you have something that you have seen that you like? We bought a dress, dyed it and altered it to get the final thing (we had a factory lined up, all went wrong - long story!), which could be a good place to start?

Why custom? Do you have an unusual colour or style in mind? x

I kinda feel like this is spam advertising the bridal shop mentioned in the second newbie post. Just me..?

Nope, I thought this too. Both posts have the same tone to them, almost as if they have been written by the same person!

Dammit I never clock that type of thing, LOL !

I also never clock when a 3 year old chain is re-added to. I really should learn to look at the posting dates / number of posts etc!

I've been moderating forums too long! That said, if I was a mod here I would still let this thread go as there's no way to be sure it isn't genuine (unless an IP search brought anything up, but half the time I can't be bothered to do that when I am moderating!) It just has that whiff about it. Spotting ancient threads that have been bumped is more difficult though. Sometimes the only clue is that you barely recognise any of the usernames, cos this is the sort of forum where people don't tend to stay around for years.
