need help - hotel recs

looneytune, 23 November, 2008 at 14:33 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

It is my H 30th Birthday next April and I need some help. he wants a weekend away, maybe lake district/whitby area. he is even happy to go a Edinburgh. But I am struggling, He is quite happy with a travelodge???! i want something a bit more swish but obviously not breaking the bank.

Please help, I looked at the De Vere hotels, but then someone mentioned on here that they are not worth the money.

Even if you know a nice hotel that isnt in the areas mentioned thats fine. I just need a starting point, and struggling!

Every year he plans lovely birthdays for me, I need to impress!!

I am based in Leeds.

How much counts as 'not breaking the bank'?

I've stayed in the Du Vin in Glasgow, which was gorgeous with fantastic service - they have hotels in most cities, including a new one opening in Edinburgh.

I paid for my parents to stay in the Hideaway Windermere for my Dad's 50th and their photos looked amazing and they said the hotel couldn't have done enough for them (we arranged through the hotel for them to have Champagne, chocolate dipped strawberries and a chocolate birthday cake in the room).

Armathwaite Hall is another nice hotel in the Lakes.

If you're thinking about the Lake District why not go for the cheaper option of a B&B (probably much more comfortable than a cheaper hotel and better service too) and spend the difference on nicer meals etc?

Thank you so much for you comments. I am rubbish at arranging things like this.

BGB that is a really good idea, do you have any recs of any B&Bs. I dont want to search and rely only on the internet. I would really like one that someone has been to before, there are some great ones, but also would hate to take him to a rubbish one!

Heres are a few more places that I have stopped in at the lake district that I would recomend.

https://www.inncollectiongroup.com/waterhead-inn/ very nice but make sure its not the room on the ground floor

https://www.lakedistricthotels.net/skiddawhotel/ a hotel rather than a B&B but prices are pretty reasonable and sometimes include evening meal.

With that budget, I would probably look at renting a cottage for the weekend rather than a hotel.

St John's Lodge in Bowness is a nice little B+B - it's not super swanky but the breakfasts were GORGEOUS; they have a massive breakfast menu and all the choices are fab. I had smoked salmon on herby potato cakes with poached eggs, mmm. It's not like a posh hotel but the rooms are nice enough and it's in a good location, and the staff are really nice.

Here is it - and I forgot about the free wi-fi (I've been at 5* hotels that couldn't manage that...)
