Need help with my dress please....

Bean2304, 20 January, 2014 at 12:00 Posted on Planning 0 9

Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum, got engaged on Christmas Day and we are getting married in Edinburgh on the 9th Oct 2014

Probably like most women I am struggling with my wedding dress. I have tried about 15 on up to now and one I have completely fallen in love with!! Its called Pronovias Balira, its the only one I have not wanted to take off. I have been looking for others but nothing seems to be coming close, only problem is its £1600 ☹️

My parents are paying for the majority of the wedding, we are also saving up ourselves and my boyfriends parents and auntie have kindly given us money too. My parents are saying the dress is far too expensive but I just cant stop thinking about it!!

Does anybody know of any dresses that are very similar to this? Or any tips for maybe getting some discount in the bridal shops? I always feel a bit cheeky to ask. I had a bad experience in a bridal shop on Sunday where basically the woman told me I was too big to be wearing a dress like that (im a 10 on top and a 12 bottom) so im feeling a bit down about it all at the moment ☹️

I have also seen this dress on the ineternet that I quite like, does anybody know what the name of it is?

Any advice would be really appreciated

Thank you,

Lorna x

    Hello & welcome! ?

If you can afford to pay for the dress yourself without anyones help and without getting into debt etc i'd go for it, it's not what i'd pay for a dress personally but I think everyone should have their dream dress. Have you considered pre loved? You could get it a lot cheaper than that that way, if not just ask in the bridal store for a discount..you won't get if you don't ask, just say "is there any way the cost could come down any as it's a bit out of my price range?" then it's not like you're cheekily just asking for it.

If you'd get another dress and still wish you had that one I think it's worth going for it.

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Yes I have looked on Preloved but unfortunately they are only size 8 and 10.

I dont think I could afford the £1600 by myself ☹️ my parents said they had in their heads about £500 but nothing I have seen even comes close to that.

I cant really understand why they they are so reluctant over the dress, they both really love clothes and a lot of the time spend quite a bit on them. Or course I woudnt expect them to pay the full £1600

My mum just keeps saying to me "its only one day" but the dress is really important to me, you want to feel your best on your wedding day dont you.

Keep an eye out for Bridal Shops having sales...I got my Essence of Australia dress down from £1500 to £400. It was originally reduced to £650 but I then let on that i'd expected to pay 50% on ordering as I didnt have all that in one go & they reduced it down to £400 for me (within 5 minutes & without asking).

I would say if you didn;'t want to take it off and you do nothing but think about it, then it is the dress for you. You could check other stockists nearby and call them up asking what they are selling the dress at, am sure if you said that you were comparing costs some would be willing to give you some form of discount.

Or, if your parents are saying around £500, is there anyway you could pay the additional amount? Thats way your parents aren't paying anymore than they want and you get your dress!

That is shocking of the bridal shop assistant saying that - definitely don't be buying your dress or anything from there, they don't deserve your custom!!!

    xx

^^ Thats where I got mine from. Tried a dress I loved on in December in a local bridal shop and when I was looking for a picture to show a bridesmaid who was home for Christmas this website came up and had it for half the price I was going to pay, I wasn't even considering getting it anywhere else. Ordered it at start of Jan and got it a couple of days later - love it and saved me a load (like £900!!).

    Yes yes to Preloved/second-hand/sample/etc?

Failing that, unless you can make up the £1100, your only option is to stamp your feet. Your posts suggest you are halfway to doing that ?

Have you checked Ebay? I fell in love with a £1400 dress and had a quick look on Ebay one day and someone was selling the exact dress in my size and it was brand new never been worn. Unfortunately her wedding had to be cancelled so the seller didn't even try the dress on when it was delivered. I got it for £600, saved me a fortune. I know you have to be careful with some things on Ebay and if you don't want one that's been worn before it may be hard to find but like me you might just hit on a bargain at just the right time.

Ebay does have a lot, I was concerned about people who have had alterations already though as they could list it as a 12 but could of been taken in a fair bit or let out. I'm also fairly tall so was worried about buying an altered dress for someone shorter and finding it only goes up to my ankles Smiley smile

Do you live near a wedding dress outlet? You may be able to find one there or contact the shop tell them you love it but it's over budget ask them if they can suggest anything similar in your price range or if they would consider selling the sample dress at a discounted price? The worse they can say is no.

Is is there something in the wedding you could compromise with your parents with - say if I don't have drinks on arrival can you have £1000 for a dress them your only having to find/discount £600

    Good luck xx
