Need to off load (car accident related)

Mrs JMP, 4 August, 2009 at 19:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 44

I helped pull out a family of 3 from a burning car today. They were 3 cars in front waiting to do a right when a car come up & struck the first one in the queue , them. Her car spun around & ended up next to mine

I heard the impact & looked to my right, then saw them. Pulled my car over to the verge ,then slow motion kicked in. I told my 5 yr old to stay in the car with my 2yr old. Got out & went to the car - knew it was not good, but made sure they were talking - then the car caugt fire & bloody hell how quick does it go up. There was me & an another women trying to get them out . I was shouting for help, as we could not lift them out. I knew they had head injuries & possible neck, but I knew they needed to get out.

What keeps going over in my mind was trying to get the girl (14) out of the back - strapped in a small space.

Seemed forever until help arrived, the boy was blue lighted straight away, the girl went in another ambulance & the Mum went in a 3rd. Then I burst into tears, shock I guess, firemen drive me home.

Police are coming to me tonight to let me know how they are.

Please god let them all be OK.

Wow. You showed the most incredible courage today - that is an incredible act of bravery on your part to be so quick thinking and get in there and get them out. You should be really proud of yourself. ?

Do let us know when you hear how the family are. Take care - you sound really shocked. Is somebody with you this evening?

Can't really add to what CBH has said - how amazingly brave of you - you probably saved their lives

    Well done you ?

Wow. Well done. I'll bet there aren't many on here who can say they've saved a life, let alone three. You should be very proud of yourself. I don't know you, and I'm proud of you!

Echoing what was said earlier - do you have someone with you now? You may well have a bit of a reaction to what's happened - you need to look after yourself (and you certainly could do with someone else to help to look after you after that!)

Well done you, you probably saved their lives. From experience, I know how much it shakes you up dealing with something like that. Have a glass of wine, relax and talk about it as much as you need to. I hope you hear good news.

That is incredibly brave. I'm sure you must be feeling totally shook up now, but this will be something to be proud of for the rest of your life - and something they'll always rembember with immense gratitude. I am in awe. ?

    Oh my goodness.

I suppose none of us know how we would react in a situation like that, sorry you had to find out, but thank goodness your 'fight' kicked in. I dread to think of the outcome had you and the other lady not went to their assistance.

    ?

Hope the family are ok and look after yourself.

MrJMP is on his way home now. I think I rambled off when my neighbour saw a fireman dropping me off - so she came in & made tea.

Makes you realise that a split second can do so much damage. Just so worried for them. Police called to say an officer is coming over at 10pm.

I never knew until today that I had a emergency kit in my car (fire extinguisher, medical & blanket) I knew there was a green cross sign on the box, but assumed it was just the bog standard plasters etc... It's like a mini ER, all but needles.

Gut instinct kicked in - but my first thought was Oh, an accident better move out the way, then braked & said $hit when I twigged what did happen.

Thanks all, will let you know any news.

Wow, am very impressed with you, you kept a very cool head (even though you may not feel like it) and you helped to save three lives.

Seeing something like that can be very upsetting, even when the outcome is good. It's likely you're in some kind of shock, which is why you feel so emotional. I see things like that a lot as a police officer, and whle I don't get as affected as I used to, you still don't get used to it.

Make sure you talk about it, it will help you to process what you've seen. If you do find it difficult to cope with, it may also help you to get some counselling. It's always made readily available to emergency services, but not necessarily to ordinary members of the public who do extraordinary things to help others, which always amazes me. Even one session can help you to process what you've been through.

Here's hoping all three of them are ok, please keep us posted.

Wow, well done you. I hope I'd have the courage to do the same in similar circumstances but I'm not convinced and I sincerely hope never to have to find out. I hope the family is ok.

And the fear of being trapped in the back after an accident is precisely why I hate travelling in 3 door cars.

Police came at 10pm & said that they were very lucky, the boy was out of it when they arrived at A&E, but family OK.

Boy, has a bad gash on his head, had a CT & all appears to be normal

Girl, cut face due to her brace going through her lip, bloody bruised leg.

Mum, bruised & cut legs & a bad sealbelt burn to her chest.

All being kept in for observation & shock.

So what with Carrot on BT just texting to say her new arrival came & this - I feel very happy (but still what if keeps lurking)

What a horrid thing to see never mind have to get involved with but well done for being brave.

It's good news that the people taken to hospital are ok physically considering how awful it could have been. Make sure you get chance to vent your thoughts and dont keep bottling up the 'what if' scenarios as they'll eat away at you. You did really well

You're amazing. Like other people have said well done for getting involved. Thinking back over it is a normal process, talk it through as much as you need to.

Wow, you did an amazing job. Hopefully it helps to know the passengers are OK but I'm sure it's normal to feel a little bit wobbly for a couple of days. I hope someone like you is around if I have an accident, that's for sure.

KTC , the weird thing was you just follow the car in front, which for the split second I did, then twigged it was bad. But whilst me & the other Women were screaming for help, people were just slowing to watch & then driving off, the odd one would just advice from their window.

Then you get the moaners who were complaining that the road was shut & they just wanted to go over there.

Well done for being so brave when a lot of other people (as you observed) do nothing. That's an amazing thing to do and it's no wonder you feel affected afterwards. Look after yourself and as others have said, after going through that you might want to look in to a counselling session or two just to process what has happened.

oh yes, aren't they little rays of sunshine? i remember taking a phone call from a bloke stuck in a traffic queue behing an acident where someone had died ☹️ obviously they were going to divert traffic but the scene perservation came first. and he was moaning away, so i said he'd have to bear with us as the officers were dealing with a fatality

but on he went, i have a meeting to get to, i'm very important...and i was most unprofessional ? and just snapped 'sir, did you hear what i just said? someone has died!'

soon shut him up but i shouldn't have said it really. you're not supposed to get annoyed at callers but he was so callous
