Needing sympathy - kitten died today

pandorasbox, 12 June, 2011 at 17:26 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 15

Hi all, feeling so sad today. We got a little kitten from a rescue shelter just last Sunday and she was so happy and fine til Thurs. She stayed over at the vets all weekend and he called to say she died this morning, she was just too tiny to fight whatever the infection was. It has hit OH really hard and we are both feeling very gloomy, so hitching to take my mind off it. Wanted to share how I was feeling, I know in the grand scheme of things it isn't the end of the world but even after less than a week I miss her so much!

Thanks everyone. OH just got back from the vet, who was so lovely with her. She is going to be cremated and he has only charged us for that, not all the medications she had over the weekend staying with him, or his time. He said it was a virus the whole litter would have had from their mother or father, so the shelter must have known when we bought her from them ('maintenance donation fee'), as she was the last one. He even said if it were him he would be asking for his money back or another kitten, but it's not like complaining about faulty goods and getting a replacement.

We were told by the shelter that all her brothers and sisters had 'gone' but it could be they had died beforehand. It is so sad to know that the shelter chose to prolong the whole litters' suffering and make money off selling each baby rather than do the kind thing and have them put down. The vet said none of them would have made it past 4 months. We thought the shelter guy was a bit funny when we asked him questions and now we know why, but at the time we just wnated to help out and give a little cat a loving home and didn't think about why he was going round the houses with his answers. It is devastating thinking how much pain the kittens all might have been going through. The house feels so empty without her, even after just a couple of days with us she had a real personality coming through.

Oh pandorasbox that is awful- how could they do that? Our cat died coming up for a year ago and she had a heart problem, I wonder in all honesty did her previous owners know about it and then put her up for adoption with us? Its awful- like you say they are real little people with feelings- not faulty goods.

I know what you mean about the house being quiet- the first few days I came home after Millie died was awful- it was so quiet. I got another cat pretty quickly- within 3 weeks but he is the total opposite of her so it was easier that way- maybe you could look at getting another cat- maybe an older one- nothing like replacing your kitten that way??

Huggs n stuff though- know how you feel.

OH has tried to call the shelter bloke but he is off til the end of the week, so we will wait and go to speak to him when we know he is definitely going to be there. They need to know what the vet said, assuming they don't already, for a practical reason in case whatever it was could spread to their other little ones they had in other areas of the shelter. I would like to get another one right now if I could but OH is feeling a bit reluctant. He is such a softy and got attached so fast I think he is scared it might happen all over again. Thanks everyone for your sympathetic words and understanding.
