New found respect for wedding cake makers!

FMG, 4 July, 2013 at 12:20 Posted on Planning 0 7

In a moment of maddness last year I said I will make my own cake. I'm a good baker and a very crafty person so I thought it would be alright. I baked the fruit cake back in February and have been feeding it with brandy since then (a 6 inch, 9 inch and 12 inch). So yesterday I thought it would be a good time to start marzipanning them.

It took me 3 hours!!!!

I am a bit of a perfectionist so I did spend ages getting each one exectly right, but that's just the marzipan, I'm dreading how long it's going to take me to ice them!!!

So the purpose of this post is to say for those who say 'HOW much did that cake cost?!!' it is worth it. So far I have dedicated a lot of hours just to baking and marzipanning them and only god knows how long it will take me to ice them. Don't get me wrong, I have enjoyed doing it and it is slowly becoming the masterpiece I imagined but it is certainly not a task to be undertaken lightly!!!

Thank you for giving suppliers prop/credit! It does help us for people to understand the time that goes into things so thank you!

I can't imagine some of the work that goes into some of the cakes I've seen at weddings! I think a lot of the time we all forget the amount of effort and hard work that goes into things and can only see as far as the price tag. Sounds like a delicious cake you're baking as well. Smiley smile

God knows how I would get on baking my own... I get into enough mess as it is baking a simple sponge! You will have to show us a photo of yours once it's all finished.

That is very nice to hear,

I am a professional cake maker (and bride to be !) and i have made many brides cakes, the prices are high but the time that goes into them is generally days and days.

    If you account for:

    meeting and tasters

    designing the cake

    sourcing the supplies

making the cake - ingredients/ gas / electric

    covering cake

creating the decorations - if you have sugar flowers then generally 200g of flower sugarpaste costs on average of £5+ these flowers or decorations generally need a good week or so to air dry to ensure they are stable for your cake.

supports needed for inside the cake to ensure it doesn't collapse

training we undertake to keep our skills up to scratch

often i am up at 5am on a saturday morning to put finishing touches to a wedding cake before i leave for the venue, and generally i am not getting to bed till gone midnight. If it is cupcakes then i like to bake these on the day of the weddingif possible as it keeps them more fresh so that is an even earlier start,

if we costed out our time to an average hourly rate we would be charging much much more than the average £200 / £300 price of a wedding cake.

so it is really lovely to be appreciated Smiley smile thank you xx

So true! Well done you on making your own cake, sure it'll work out perfect Smiley smile

I bake quite a lot and make birthday cakes for family & friends etc but would never attempt my own wedding cake as I just don't have the skill, respect the makers so much & it's amazing how perfect the look when all finished with..the work that goes into them is so impressive. I'm sure you'll feel a huge achievement when you see yours all finished Smiley smile
