New name, new signature

TashAndOwl, 13 July, 2016 at 18:30 Posted on Planning 0 19

After much debating with myself and an unexpected change of heart, i've decided to change my name after getting married. This seems like an incredibly stupid question but I really don't know the answer... How do you end up with a new signature?! Do you just pick one? How much practice does it take to get it consistent?! I have enough trouble with my current one, which seems to have evolved over time/changes on a daily basis...

I have 10 months to figure this out but any advice is welcome. Also please tell me if i'm a bit mad to have even thought of this!

Not stupid at all, I think most of us ladies will have wondered it. Mine became pretty much a scrawl when I got married the first time, loosely based on what it was before. Cotton was nice and easy to adapt to, but Wainwright it going to be a bit longer and need a bit more thinking about. Have no idea what it's going to look like yet....

Haha I understand very well, my new surname is going to be very similar to yours. Also slightly upset about sliding to the end of the alphabet!

I decided not to bother. Oh is quite happy about it and we both answer to either name anyway. I did however do a whole a4 page of signature practised which made me feel about 15! My initials just don't go. They won't flow. I checked h signature and it's a scribble. Nothing to do with his name. Anyway my only suggestion is practise practise practise and see what works best for you ?

I have tried to come up with a new signature but they all look so rubbish. My first name and surname don't flow at all and there are no nice, swirly things that can be done with Smith ? X

Eeeep, I'm going from B to W and although I've been practicing i switch between 2 and they don't flow as well as my current one. 10 more months to practice.

Dumb question alert!!! Do you sign the register in your new name?! I better get practising.

I go from a C to an A, & longer than my already quite lengthy name. I might do what he does & basically draw a straight line.

I'm thinking of keeping mine as it is. It's a bit of a scribble anyway, doesn't look like my name now. We'll see I guess!

Nope, you sign in your maiden name. Although we had our rehearsal last night and the vicar was saying it's not really a signature - it's more just writing your name as it has to be legible Smiley smile

My maiden name signature is essentially a squiggly line, so nothing too elaborate to begin with.

I've been practicing my new signature since we got engaged though... ?

Over time my signature evolved from being first name, surname, to just first name. So I'll be keeping it as it is!

We've also decided to double up our surnames, I didn't wanna lose my name, I'm the last in my family and it's part of my identity. Not overly unusual, but his is very common. I told him I don't mind what he wants to do with his surname, but he wants us to be the same. So that's that!

His parents aren't happy about it tho. They're not happy about anything!

Haha same! I felt ridiculous and nearly hid the page from OH until i realised that was probably even more ridiculous. I thought I had longer to think about it until I was doing my new married passport and realised I would need to have my new sig on it.

I was going to practise then I thought, got ages I'll think about it later, it was even on a to do list ha. However completely forgot until I went to the bank with the marriage certificate. I did try in the bank but also got told I could keep my old one as it is a squiggle anyway so that's what I've done, especially has I haven't updated my passport but have my driving license and I don't want that awkward thought of crap which signature have I used. Went from R Williams to Langlotz, you cannot make that surname pretty Smiley sad

Oh the things we go through! I like the idea of just using your first name. I could possibly get away with my current unreadable squiggle and just add a bit on to the end

I was put on the spot with my signature as well - I think my first time was in the bank?

Thankfully my old name and new name share characteristics, and my initial signature was a bit of a scrawl, so I just added two letters and lengthened the scrawl! And I can just about get away with it if I forget about the two letters, so it actually works really well Smiley smile

I wish I'd thought about it a bit more though - I love flamboyant signatures and should have taken this opportunity to make one for myself!

I didn't practice beforehand and didn't really think about it until I went back to work. Then for a few weeks I was signing things using a combination of both signatures, depending on whether or not I remembered I'd changed my name! I like my new signature though, my old one had turned into a squiggle but my new name is shorter and easier to sign. It was actually pretty easy to get it looking the same after the first few attempts.

OH just came to bed to find me with a pen and A4 piece of paper covered in attempts at a signature! I was embarrassed (goodness knows why) but apparently seeing that made it hit home for him.... I'm still not 100% on the whole name change thing.

My H's was a scrawl before, now it's just a scrawl of more letters. I tut every time I see him sign anything!

I am hyphenating so I will have new surname and keeping the same one as my daughter. It works out well as my surname will be a buffer as my first name and new married surname contain an unfortunate amount of S's and T's!! And if not said clearly has to potential to be misheard as "Snot!" Awkward!

I'm sure for work I'll still use my maiden name and dealing with school issues for my daughter. Personal things will be married name and anything official will be the full shebang!

I do need to practice my new signature though as we've less than 4 months to go!!
