New survey on the average cost of a wedding.....

osbaldwick, 13 June, 2010 at 16:01 Posted on Planning 0 23

According to a survey of 2000 people by Direct Line, the average cost of a wedding has spiralled to £21,000. Guests also spend an average of £300.

That does sound a lot to me but how does this compare to people on here?

Ours is currently less than £6k and all we have left to buy (or whats not on our 'cost list) are BM dresses and flowers, and we haven't really scrimped, we've had what we had wanted but just not gone over the top x

I just replied on DW but I'm below average ?

We're at around 15k at the mo, not including honeymoon. We're having about 100 people though and we're spending quite a lot on photography, but that was really important to us. The rest I think we've been pretty frugal on.

I just can;' justify spending that much on a wedding.

We arent relying on our parents as we are in our 30's!

I think its untrue the 'average' wedding is that much-ours is costing around 2-3k including honeymoon!!

Who wants to spend that much anyway?!

We are probably there or there abouts i think, not including honeymoon.

Each to their own and all that - i don't think people should get themselves into lot's of debt for a wedding, it is just one day of the rest of your life, but is the money is available and you are happy with it then why not.

I've been to some amazing 2k weddings and some amazing 30k wedding....as long as bride and groom are happy what else matters? ?

We didn't set a budget, we kind of knew what we wanted and then went with what we liked. Then we paid for things as we went along. We paid for everything ourselves.

I recently added up everything and without the honeymoon it was in the region of 17k, we are going on a delayed honeymoon on September that is costing around 6k we are going to florida for 3 weeks.

I don't begrudge a single penny we spent on our wedding, but I think a wedding costing a fraction will be equally wonderful, it's all about personal choice and tbh nobody else should judge you on how much your wedding cost, be it mega bucks or not.

I do think we suffered from living in Kent though because in the South East prices for things seem incredibly inflated, don't get me started on the cost of registrars down here !!

We aren't relying on our parents either but it's all relative isn't it? It adds up very quickly if you have a sit down meal with a lot of people. We won't be getting into debt for it. If we were in that situation then we wouldn't be spending it, at the end of the day it's about our marriage, not the wedding.

But if I want to shell out on loads of wine and nice food then so be it ?

WSS. We are in our twenties paying for most of it ourselves, and will probably be around 11k for the wedding. But it's what we want, some people want to spend less others want to spend more - it's a cliche, but everyone's different!

I know. I nearly fainted when we looked at the price for a Sunday, the most expensive day for registrars!

I should think ours is about half of that without including honeymoon.

Ours should ba about half of that! We have economised a lot and have bargained for about everything! Im another believer that you wedding is what you make it! And if you have the money to spend...well go on and do it...but dont be getting yourself into debt just for a wedding!

I think ours will be about 11k but we havent set a strict budget. We are having the day that we want and it will cost what it costs. I think if you can afford a 20k+ wedding, why not? As long as the day is what you want it to be and not for show then who cares?

Yeah, I totally agree if you can afford it without getting in debt, and are funding it yourselves, then fine

But spending money for moneys sake just doesnt sit right to me-and thats why we are sticking to a rather smaller budget

We are still having the sit down meal-but for 20 people, not 100

The evening recpetion is where eveyrone is getiing invited Smiley laugh

I do hate the thought of how much money is going on our wedding, we prob going to spend half that statistic without honeymoon.

We were just grumbling today at how this saving means no holidays this year - it's been tough as I'm a "holiday" girl - I love travelling and miss it terribly!!

Still, it will be worth every penny. I'm only spending out big on things that matter!

The guest bit is what I don't want. I really want to keep the costs down for the guests as some are travelling a long way to be with us and that will involve at least one overnight stay. Do you think if we put into invited that we don't want gifts that people will listen to that? Their gift is turning up, that's enough.

As for our budget, we haven't set it in stone yet as we're in early stages of planning but £8k max although would like to say it'll come in closer to £6k. Will be doing lots of things ourselves (well, we'll try)!

Way below average here hoping it won't come to more than 9k, at about 8k at the mo but luckily we have cake maker, hairdresser & crafty person for invites in the family & all in one venue so no need for cars & we're having a student photographer to save some pennies I can easily see how you could get to that amount of money though. Certainly wouldn't & won't be getting into debt for one day!!

The trouble with statistics vs what everyone is paying is that people include different things in their budget. I'm sure some of the stuff on our budget wouldn't be on some people's so it's hard to compare.

Our overall total that we talk about includes absoloutely everything wedding related, honeymoon and honeymoon spends. Our honeymoon and wedding were pretty much the same amount!!

We're looking at substantially more than the average, and that's wothout the cost of the honeymoon. We've been able to have exactly what we wanted though, and are funding it ourselves. I think it's all relative to your location, and which bits are a priority to you.

I think whatever you spend, the most important part is the promise you can make - it's that part which is priceless.

We are probably spending around that plus the honeymoon costs, but we are paying for it ourselves and not getting into debt...

We're having what we want, nothing is stupidly extravagant but were having the little details we want, a great photographer, lots of stunning flowers, stunning dress. Plus its a two day affair, were having an intimate wedding the first day then the next day were having a big party in a pub

2 weeks on friday and I cant wait!!!

Ours is about £11k but that doesnt include honeymoon.

We have had a large contribution from my parents but do not feel we are 'relying' on them as some have put it. We have added the rest of the money and could have afforded to have most of the things we have without the contribution. We would prob have had to cut back on honeymoon and a few other things.

We have been extremely barganious (if thats even a word!!) with everything and the only thing i have paid the full price for is the registrar fees (Couldnt really haggle on this!!)

I dont think it matters if some people have 'relied' completely on contributions or paid it all themselves or spent 1p or £1million, i think it is all relative and if they money is there and avaliable go for it!
