New Zealand on a budget...and Emirates Airline?

Mellow_Yellow, 9 January, 2013 at 13:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 16

Hey all, sorry I'm AWOL this week. Final exams next week so studying like mad, plus work is manic!

Has anyone ever flown with Emirates? If so, how would you rate them?

For anyone familiar with NZ, how much spending money would a couple need for two weeks there, if accommodation was free and most meals were eaten at home? So maybe car hire for 2-3 days, a night out in the city, etc. I'm thinking about visiting my brother so we would stay with him, and mostly eat family meals at home. We would buy the weekly food shop while there, but presume this would only be £100 per week or so, similar to UK?

ETA: I might not get back on today, but will try...TIA!

Can't help with NZ, but Emirates are very, very good. One of the best airlines in my opinion. We fly with them a lot to get to India / Malaysia and the service has always been top-notch.

Not sure about Emirates as we flew with Singapore (who were incredible!).

I didn't think that NZ was much cheaper than home although the wine you get for your money is much better. I'd budget in the same way you would if you were going to do those things at home as well as additional money for treats.

I don't know much about NZ but Emirates is very good. Flew with them to Dubai and on to Africa and they were really good. Excellent service. I'd definitely fly with them again,

I've flown with emirates a lot. The entertainment system is decent but don't ever sit near the back. Their money saving strategy is to have 1 nice meal on the menu and one distinctly less appealing. If you're anywhere near the back you ALWAYS end up with the rubbery omelette option!

NZ is reasonably priced, it depends if you do any activities, I hired a campervan and road tripped and did a lot of jumping off things and going rapidly down things so all my money and costs were in there. We shopped at supermarket to keep costs down, prices after conversion are similar to UK.

What stuff do you plan to do/see?

PLEASE tell me you have an authentic recipe for Singaporean chilli crab? I had it when we were there as part of our honeymoon (had it as part of an omelette at breakfast and I almost cried it was so good)!

Exactly what Storky said. S.A are amazing.

I actually found that NZ prices where comparable with UK prices and sometimes it actually worked out more expensive when eating out.

I will ask momma Chua!! My aunt and cousins are flying over in a week to visit their daughter/sister who is studying in London and is my second shooter, I'll ask my aunt as well because I know she really cooks only Singaporean food.

I'm obsessed with Hainese chicken rice and prawn mee hoon (noodles) I hope you tried that as well!!

That would be amazing if you could, thank you! Oooh, I had that too, it was gorgeous. In fact everything I ate in Singapore was delicious, whether at our hotel, a restaurant or the open air food markets. My mouth is watering just thinking about it!

I haven't been to NZ but I've flown with Emirates a lot to the Philippines and they're brilliant. I even look forward to the plane food on the flights.

I have flown with Emirates and they were fabulous. Would highly recommend.

My Sister lives in NZ and the price of things is actually a bit higher is most situations than it is here.

Last time my sister flew over with was with Air New Zealand and she thought there were pretty crap, ditto Quantas.

    Does any of that help?

We flew with emirates to Australia and I thought they were good. The entertainment is good and the food was the best airplane food I've ever had. I didn't think any of the menu options were bad.

We have friends who have emigrated to Australia and so they travel back and forwards often. They said that they prefer emirates to all of the other options. They said that they have the widest variety of films, tv shows, games etc.

Thanks Hitchers, all round ? for Emirates then!

With regards to the spending money, we would be going there to see family, but would like to maybe see a few things while there - not sure what's worth seeing tbh, ideas? We would be spending two weeks with family, an so would buy all groceries/wine for those two weeks, and probably treat them to a dinner or two out...although they may not want to as they actually really love cooking at home, and with a small child meals out can sometimes be more bother than fun. Other than that, maybe car hire for a few days or even a week, price dependant.
