I'm sure you'll be fine, we managed to find a venue for a Saturday less than 8 months in advance, so it is possible but you do need to work fast (we booked ours within 2 weeks of getting engaged).

Sarah-Kay - that is reassuring to hear! I keep hearing how venues get booked up so quickly etc! I've now got a bit of a short list so will arrange to see them as soon as. Oh and run them by the other half!

We went to Bruges to celebrate my birthday and the ring was my last birthday present. He took it out of the box and did the down on one knee thing! I said yes of course and jumped around the hotel room. It was quite simple really and private - just how I wanted it. I'd cheekily pointed out a ring I really liked a few months ago 'just in case' and he remembered it.

Also we actually met via an internet forum!

Us too. Engaged 22nd December 2007, married 2nd August 2008. Booked the venue the last weekend in January and had a choice of Saturday dates.

Me too!! Just got engaged at christmas, and found a venue first week of january available for 27th june this year, so it can be done!! (actually had a choice of two and one was one of our top choices so we were very lucky!)

I'm also new to hitched - got engaged on 29th Jan, all very exciting! just spent my first weekend venue hunting, which was so much fun. I have noticed that some venues are pretty booked up already. I really wanted to have May 1st as my date but when we saw our dream venue (Thornton Manor on the Wirral) I have had to change the date to get a booking. Just waiting to hear if the caterer is free before we can firm up the date but we're now looking at 27th June, which is a Sunday as every Saturday between May and end of September has been taken! Having said that loads of other ones we looked at have only just started to take 2010 bookings so will probably be fine, we definitely would have had a big choice of dates had we chosen somewhere else.

Ideally I would like a tithe barn type venue which allows you to chose the caterers and also has no / reasonable corkage - I've found 2 both in Suffolk so fingers crossed. H2B has no real idea what he would like apart from a civil ceremony so at least if we start looking he can get more of an idea about what he likes / doesn't like. We are in London though so can only visit at weekends. I've never actually been to Suffolk so this is feeling a bit crazy but it all looks lovely! I'm from up north, H2B is from London and we have family and friends scattered everywhere so at least it would be neutral for everyone!

I'd be happy with spring, summer or early autumn to be honest but have now realised the football World Cup is summer 2010 - probably should avoid those few weeks knowing our crowd!
