Newbie here with less than a year to go!

illumine, 18 September, 2014 at 14:43 Posted on Planning 0 13

Hi everyone *waves*

I've been lurking for a while now, reading posts here and there and finally thought I would join in the fun! Would love to meet some other brides out there as I don't know anyone else planning a wedding right now so would love to find some new people to chat to outside of my own family!

I'm getting married on 5th September 2015and we still have everything to do, eek! We booked the church and venue a few months ago but earlier this year we also bought a house that needed a lot of decorating to make it liveable and we've only just finished so we figured if we just set the date and booked the venues, everything else would fall in place later.

Fast forward to the house being almost done and we're just back from holiday (that we booked way back in January before any of this happened) and I'm thinking I better get on with the planning now! I went to see some dresses yesterday and am struggling somewhat because I had hoped that dress finding would be like how I met my OH – I just knew. Everything about our meeting and being together has always been based on feeling like you just knew so I was hoping I'd have that instant feeling with trying on my dress but didn't happen. I have three on my short list and one is constantly playing on my mind even though my family aren't quite so keen on it but I still worry that I didn't have that instant "knowing". Having said that, it was the only dress I wanted to swish around in at the time and it's definitely stuck in my mind since! I'm going to go back within the next week to look at the three again and I've seen a couple more on their website I want to try on and hoping that a second visit will allow me to have a bit more of a clear mind when choosing.

Aside from that, we've still got everything to sort out! I'm a designer so I'll be doing my own stationery and one of my bridesmaids is going to do our cake which is handy. We might also have a friend who has some vintage cars they've offered us as transport but I haven't actually seen them yet to make a decision, going to go to some wedding fairs over the next couple of months to hopefully get things well underway.

Am I crazy behind in my planning or is it doable?!

Thank you for reading, it's lovely to meet you all! ?

    Hello Illumine,

Huge Congratulations and welcome to Hitched!
I say it is totally doable but you may have to compromise on your favourite vendors since a lot get booked way in advance - still always worth an enquiry though.

    Happy Planning Smiley smile

Easily doable within a year don't panic! Do start booking up your suppliers though as most of the good ones will be nearly full roundabout now

Hi there, you get married a couple of weeks after me and i'm definitely still in early planning stage so it will be possible. I've booked so much in the past month, everything that needs advance booking. So tog, car, dj, band, dress all done, cake and florist upcoming and i think that's it for advance. Everything else will fall in place as you say! Just put a weekend aside to research and send a million emails to those you're interested in for all companies, and then you'll only be left with some with availability with who you'll whittle down further/meet/book. It'll be fine!

    Welcome to Hitched!

Definitely doable but I would get cracking with your photographer as a matter of urgency. Also, if you want a band I'd start thinking about that pretty soon too.

    Happy planning! Smiley smile

    Hi illumine!

I get married the day before you and don't feel like I've done that much. We have venue, registrar and photographer, OH auntie will be making our cake and that's it, I've not done anything else. I have a couple of appointments in October to see some dresses!!

Hi, welcome to hitched! I get married in 9 days (!) we had 8 months to plan, so it's totally doable. I would definitely say get on to photographers straight away though, they get so booked up! You only need 6-8 months for your dress, so you have time to try other dresses on. Not everyone gets that feeling of 'the one' with their dress, don't put that pressure on yourself. You just need to feel good in it, and know it's what you want to wear on your big day. Good luck with everything, keep us all updated!

Thank you for the feedback everyone, it's good to know others have done it in as much (or less time)!

We've got an appointment to see our photographer a week on Sunday and they've pencilled us in for our date. We contacted two photographers at the same time but our preferred option was available so that's all sorted! I've picked out my dress already now too, I need to find some shoes before I can have my measurements taken but it's all paid for so that's helpful. Going to look at bridesmaids dresses next week as my cousin is free so we have to work around her!

As for cake, we don't need to worry as my other bridesmaid is doing that for us but we do need to sort out transport/entertainment soon I know. We have a family friend who has some old cars that they have offered us to use but I haven't actually seen the cars yet to know if they are suitable. Hopefully will be able to sort something soon and we are going to several wedding fairs in the next month so should be able to sort something out quite easily I hope.

I'm designing my own stationery as I am a graphic designer so another thing less to worry about which is handy!

    Welcome Illumine

You get married 2 days after me!!! :-D how exciting, I haven't really spoken to anyone getting married same day as me or even close to me but this is where I am at:

Venue, registrar, photographer, photo booth booked. Friend from school is doing the cake. Found the shoes, and chosen colours for BM and décor etc. Dress wise I have been to 4 bridal shops and got 2 in the short list now but like you I didn't have that instant knowing and now wondering if the ONE is still out there :-\ anyway booked into another shop next Thur so will take it from there.

We still have a lot to do, and im constantly thinking about it all but we are also decorating our home that we just moved into in June, house needs a lot of work so my OH keeps telling me to get house focused..... he doesn't realise our big day will be here before we know it..... being a man! Ha ha

    xx

    Welcome Smiley smile

I get married the day after you! So far I've booked my venue, registra, photographer & DJ. Buying an M&S cake & having my mum decorate it for me. Save the Dates have just gone out, give notice in November, picked the colour scheme, got my dress, shoes & jewellery, chosen bridesmaids, ushers & best man. I just can't wait to start sending out invites!

We had the same thing in that we got our first house together earlier this year and have been decorating it up though it's pretty much done now so I thought best to get wedding planning! Seems crazy to think it was back in April/May when we set the date and now we have less than a year to go.

Lovely to meet some more people with close-by dates though!

We just got transport booked over the weekend and the most pressing things left are videographer (I think we're going for one now) and entertainment. I'm going with fake flowers and have spoken to the woman doing them, she said to get in touch with her after Christmas to start sorting them out.

I'm very stuck on what to do about shoes though as I need to know what I'm wearing before I can be measured for my dress however I can't have much of a heel if I wear one as I used to have tendonitis and was on doctor's orders to not wear heels. I can wear a couple of inches maximum but most of the time I wear flat shoes so I'm wondering whether it would be best to stick to flat because that's in my comfort zone? If I go with a slight heel I then have the dilemma of actual shoes versus sandals (I have terrible problems breaking in shoes – sandals can be much easier for me!) I do want to be comfortable though because I have so many problems with footwear and that's the one day I don't want to have sore feet!

Flat shoes are fine! Nobody will see t hem anyway and you will most likely be on your feet all day!

Hello and congratulations!!! I would look up photographers ASAP if you haven't as they do get booked up quickly but other than that there isn't really a rush! We have booked a lot of stuff early but that's only because I go through waves of planning and then nothing for months lol x
