Newbie... hi

I say I’m a newbie but in reality I feel I know many members/users of this forum already since I’ve read through that many threads!

My OH and I got engaged June this year, after being together 4 years. We went to Rome for my birthday, and were sat at the Trevi Fountain eating ice cream after a lush evening meal overlooking the Pantheon, it was perfect, but he didn’t propose. He had wanted to, but didn’t.

Instead we had a packed week, we got home drove 3 hours to the Lakes and met my brother, we then went home and spent the evening there all 4 us and after saying good bye to my brother my OH suggested a ride out to ‘cheer me up’ (He knows how sad I get saying good bye to my brother who lives in Exeter). We ended up at Tynemouth, where we spend a lot of our time; we’re always going there with a flask of tea, rain or shine. Anyway I was upset because my brother had left, and OH had brought me to Tynemouth, which in my own words ‘we always come to Tynemouth its boring’ I was being that much of a Diva I turned down an ice cream (I never turn down ice cream), there were tears on the beach, OH was so distressed, bless him. We walked to the end of the beach to ‘our rock’ and he got down on knee and popped the question, safe to say I was feeling guilty about being such a diva, but of course I said yes, after asking him is he was sure he wanted to marry such a grumpus, but he said he ‘wouldn’t change me for the world’. We had planned on having a long engagement to save save save, but started looking anyway, just to see what was out there, and how much we would need to save. Well it’s safe to say once we started looking we realised we couldn’t wait, and after my dad offered us £4000 towards the wedding we realised we didn’t need to save that much more, and booked a venue, today we paid deposit for said venue, and registrar, and it all just got very real. We managed to get a good deal £2500 for 40 day guest and 80 night guests at Linden Hall, Northumberland, with wedding breakfast, evening food and drinks package included. We are so both excited and we can’t wait. Although I know it will soon creep up on us, and the venue is pretty much the only thing we have planned so far, we don’t have a TOG, dress, band etc etc, but I have taken so much inspiration from these forums, leading up to booking venue and my wedding planning book is filled with ideas taken from advice, and ideas gained from all you insightful folk and I want to say thank you for that. You’ve definitely helped in my hours of need thus far.

So we get married 12th September 2014. ?

I hope I've introduced myself in the right way, I don't think I've ever written on a forum in my life, but felt I wanted to get involved. If I've done it wrong I'm sure you'll let me know! =)

    Hello Smiley smile

I originally read Tynemouth as Teignmouth (reinforced with the fact your brother is from Exeter) and thought god what a long trip to cheer you up!

What a great deal for the venue, it looks beautiful in the photos (had a quick google search) I'm sure it will be an amazing day Smiley smile

If your ever down your brothers way my aunt lives in Exmouth and is a seamstress - she's been doing it for years and is dirt cheap (she basically does it for a hobby after retiring) she charges way too little people end up paying her extra! Just a thought!

Haha.... you remind me of myself as far as the ice cream goes... I've only ever said no during an unwarranted strop (and secretly regretted it)!

Huge congratulations, that's a lovely story Smiley smile

Hello and welcome to Hitched, what a wonderful proposal story! My friend was the same, she got super grouchy about being dragged around this walk in the rain and her fiance was desperately trying to gear up to ask and kept stalling because of her foul mood lol

Thanks for sharing it with us!!

Our stories are quite similar. OH was supposed to propose in Iceland under the Northern Lights, but changed his mind last minute! Then when he made up his mind I had a terrible day at work and was grumpy all the way here to Paris! Guilt trip for life!

Bless them for being so patient and loving us for who we are, eh?

Congratulations and welcome to Hitched, hopefully we will hear more and more from you Smiley smile

Welcome ? lovely story. Don't worry you've still got time but I would book the TOG and registrar/church as soon as you can ( if you have particular vendors in mind I would also enquire) I was shocked at how far in advance people book up. Happy planning x

Yea, Ive already booked the registrar, and we got the time that we wanted so we are so Happy with that. ?

We had some doubts over the venue itself, mainly because of the wedding planner, she seems a bit useless, and her lack of communication is poor. Has anybody else had problems with this, we decided to just go for it and hope that once they had our money they would improve, probably wrong in thinking that because you'd think they'd try and impress in order to get the cash! However my OH and I knew we wanted to get married there. It was the Inner Hall that did it for us, with those stairs. It was a cold Autumn night when we went and they had the huge fires were lit and we both knew it was where we wanted to say 'I do' (The Price helped alot too, he he)

We plan on having our drinks reception in the conservotory and drawing room, with lots of booze, and perhaps a magician to keep the guests entertained whilst we trapse the gardens getting our photos taken!

We are then using the hotel restaurant for the wedding breakfast as it's smaller than the function room that most use, its also so much more cosier, it has lush dark red walls, and we are thinking of just using the restaurant chairs and tables, so it doesn't look overly 'weddingy'. I had oringanally said to OH we should look for somewhere we don't need chair covers, but these places don't exist in our price range.

We then intend to have our evening do, and celebrate in what the hotel calls the bigge suite, which I had orginially HATED on the open day, it has the vilest yellow carpet, and as I said before the wedding planner is useless, so on the open day she had done absolutely nothing to sell the room, it was actually the General Manager who showed us the hidden gems of the conservatory, drawing room and restaurant, we had originally wanted to use these into the night, but music was a restriction, so changed our minds against it! But like I have read on this here forum, nobody will even notice the carpet, and a large proportion gets pulled back to reveal the dance floor anyway, besides the lights are going to be low!

I think thought because of the garish carpet in the bigge suite, and the dark red walls, we are going to go for a gold and white colour scheme. (Champagne for the bridemaids rather than a garish yellowy gold) We are going to try and make alot of our table decorations and what not, and we have already made a start on the invitaions, but thats about as far as we have got. We are looking to get a band for the night time, and we have no idea where to start with TOGs, they are SO expensive, is it better to spend more money? Or is it better to go reasonable? but why are they reasonable? its all very difficult!

To be honest we discarted venues we went to visit where communications were poor. It was such a vital part of the planning, didn't want to get stressed by someone not being helpful...

Having said that, your venue looks gorgeous, and the plan is great!

Not sure what kinda of prices you've been getting, maybe you can put your budget or contact one of the suppliers of the forum as they are known for more reasoable prices?

    Good luck!
