Newly engaged and no idea where to start!!

antheia1984, 13 August, 2010 at 08:58 Posted on Planning 0 3

We are newly engaged and very very excited :-) But we have no idea where to start- we have some ideas, however I was a bit more worried about the "legal part"- I heard that popular venues get booked up 2years in advance but you register the date with the superintendant of the district- what happens if you start paying the venue fees etc then the registarar for that district says they don't have the date avilable to marry you? Will the venue accept it?

Congratulations and welcome to the lovely world of Hitched!

Generally the legal part is not a problem - in our district the venues deal with the registrars on your behalf , so once you book the venue they send off a date request to the registrar. Our district we were also really lucky in that you can do this more than a year in advance.

I would say start considering what venues you're interested in, get that booked in and the rest will come together. Once you have all this booked, focus on finding a caterer. photographer, videographer and sorting transport if you are planning to have or need to have these elements as they do get booked up very quickly! (Also, these will be amongst your biggest expenditures so it helps to know how much money you will need to pay!)

Good luck - if you have any questions we're always here with friendly advice and masses of experience ? xx

    Congratulations on your engagement.

I was worrying about this too. I'm getting married 26th May 2012, but found out that we can't send Notice of marriage to Registrar until a year before. However, we found our venue and provisionally booked it, we then phoned the Registrar and they sent us a form to book the date. All we had to do was sign a confirmation form and send a £50.00 holding fee. We still have to send Notice one year before the date, but at least the date is in their diary.

May be worth phoning your council to see if they operate in the same way.

Good luck and let me know how you get on
