Newly Engaged!! HELP!

becks123, 23 July, 2012 at 15:26 Posted on Planning 0 8

So I've just got engaged (well about a month ago!) and have no idea where to start in planning my wedding....me and my fiancee have decided 2014 will probably be the year to get married and we are going to look at venues next weeks so I suppose until we have decided on a venue there is not much else I can do?!

However, I would like to try and think of some colour schemes so at least i can start looking, but am really struggling with this so does anyone have any ideas? xx

Firstly, Congratulations!! and welcome to hitched!!

You should make a rough guest list up so when you visit venues you know how many people you are catering for but also if venues have a couple of room options they can show you which room will be suited to you both for your numbers. Also, have you thought about having a church or civil ceremony? Again, something to think about before visiting venues.

With colour schemes, ours changed 3 times over the last 2 years, and only changed again recently so dont worry about it too much. Think about favourite colours, themes - i.e country garden rustic, bright summer colours, or a winter wedding.

    Congratulations and welcome!

I probably can't give you much advice at the moment as I'm very new to all this too - it's all a bit confusing and overwhelming at the beginning isn't it?! They're a very helpful bunch on here though, so I'm sure there'll be someone along soon with some words of wisdom for you.

I was in the same situation as you a couple weeks ago - getting my head in a spin about themes and colours. Some helpful advice I got from people on here was not to drive yourself to crazy about it until you've found your venue as, ultimately, everything else will come together around that. It is hard not to get carried away though when it's all so new and exciting!

Keep us updated about how your venue hunt goes. We've got our first couple of viewing appointments lined up for next week. So excited! Feels like I'm waiting for Christmas! x

I really recommend finding your venue first then worrying about details like colour schemes, also my colour scheme is being dictated by the bridesmaid dresses which were only picked once I'd chosen my dress. I knew I wanted dark blue but I'd looked at royal blue, cobalt, sapphire, and navy blue which are all quite different. The dresses are cobalt/sapphire blue which match my engagement ring.

    Again, congratulations and welcome.

It will seem very daunting when you think of everything that needs to be done, but don't panic. It's always best to get the venues and rough guest list sorted first. They're the mot important thing to work around and may dictate what date you choose and where you can have it. Even if you haven't chosen these yet though, there's always something to be thinking about. If you're having a sit down meal you can already start thinking of different table centrepieces, looking at cakes, dresses, stationary, favours. There's lots of things that you can get ideas from before you even have a theme, if you decide to have a theme. If you have a basic idea that you can just tweak to fit in around a colour/theme then you can save yourself some stress. I'm a 2014 bride and I've done so much already. Most things I haveat least a rough idea of what I want and is usually a case of running it by hthe OH and sorting out the details between us.

Best thing I did was make a list of everything we needed/wanted in a note pad and allocated a page or 2 to each item so I could scribble down ideas when I had them, then became best friends with google and hitched! OH and I are both really happy with everything so far and have had no arguments or disagreements, except when I was told I wasn't allowed a sweetie buffet I did a bit of sulking and pouting, but now we're probably going to compromise and have little sweet jars included (somehow?) in the centrepieces. The colour theme will be dictated by the dress my BM chooses, then I can just match the boys cravats and the chair sahses, balloons etc.

Any things you find you like, but are unsure of flash on here. We all love a good flash and you'll get some VERY honest opinions xx

    Congratulations!

I also got engaged a month ago, on the 22nd, (our 3rd anniversary :-))

We'v not set a date yet but have been looking at dresses and venues and we have discussed details (probably doing this completely the wrong way round but hey, its our civil partnership...) Looking forward to going through the planning and preperations with her though! And to help from guys on this forum and going through all of your own preperations with you!

And so far I think I have an idea of what I want for my dress, we have an idea of centerpeices, we have our first dance song, a colour theme (red and white), and a rough ideas of numbers for the ceremony/breakfast, but the evening is going to be a bit of a free for all when it comes to invites. I'm a bit excitable hehe. (I'm just battling to stop the OH from turning the entire day into a football themed wedding...)

The only thing I really have NO ideas on is the favours, and what to do for them. I have an idea that I want it to be something that can be a keepsake, but other than that...

Anyways, just thought I would tag onto this thread to say hi as well and introduce myself and where we're up to a bit! :-)

    Congartulations Kaz.

I don't think there's any right or wrong way round with planning. If you get some ideas for something then go for it. Most people will say venues are most important as they can book up fast and a guest list is always a good idea so you know what size venue you need. Other than that, just have fun with it. Have you got any pics of your dress you can flash on here? x

    Congrats

I got engaged in Feb im a 2014 bride too ? and I have booked the church, reception venue, cars, dj, my dress.
lol and alll theses just happend to flow so dont stress just enjoy the planning and looking.

if you go on hitched venue search and type ur location it, all the venues near you come up send off for all their booklets so you can have a really good look without the pressure.

always remember these places have employed professionals to take their venue pictures so the ones you get it down too make sure you view all. I had one i fell IN LOVE with but it was next to a crab farm lmao!!

    good luck Smiley smile

    Hi there!

I'm about two months ahead of you so i'm not an expert myself! Smiley smile

First thing i did was make a draft guest list. This enabled me to get rid of venue's that were to small/too large.

Then we started visiting venues. We went to around 7 and fell in love with the 7th. After that we visited the church and that's all booked up now.

We have the photographer coming on Thursday to have a chat (his our family photographer so we will be having him full stop)

And that's about it for now! I'm enjoying looking at magazines - i have three years to go so got a while yet

    Enjoy planning : )

Sorry for late reply, been offline for a couple of weeks.

There are a couple of dresses, apologies if they end up huge!

this was the original I liked

i like the red band at the top on this, but i would prefer it in plain red

and i hate the top of this but like the red at the bottom front, my ideal would be the top one with the red band at the top rather than under the bust, with the red running round to the front like the bottom one, not that im awkward lol. I do love the top tho, and have said for a few years that i like that one!

    What do u guys think?
