Nice formal dresses please

pandorasbox, 29 August, 2012 at 13:30 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 20

Me and OH are going on a cruise for HM Mark II at Christmas, and one night is the Captain's fancy dinner. I did plan to get my wedding dress shortened but don't want to just yet. I have been googling idly on the lookout for a non-frumpy formal/cocktail dress but don't really like anything. Does anyone who wears posh stuff have any reccs for me please? Have tried Karen Millen, Coast, Monsoon, Debs and John Lewis so far. Cheers.

Don't know if you class them as 'posh' but have you tried Warehouse and Oasis? They normally have some lovely dresses

I can't remember who it was now, but someone the other week was showing a dress from phase eight, green long evening/maxi dress for a wine party. It was lovely have a look on there.

Good point, it's still a bit end of summer start of A/W right now. I might need to wait a bit. I like to plan ahead so I can budget my wages, but I think I may be a little too ahead of myself right now.

Thanks for all the other suggestions, I will have a good browse and see if there is anything that isn't end of summer sale!

I got a lovely Ted Baker dress for my HM and I'm going to wear it for a cruise we're going on at the end of November.

Still need to get some formal dresses though so I'll be keep a beady eye on this thread.

P, what sort of dress do you want? Full length, cocktail, sleeveless, neckline etc? What sort of size? What colours suit you? I might have something I can lend you x

Alexon? You can buy from them direct or via John Lewis. They have some nice stuff on sale just now which isn't too summery colour-wise.

Thanks Cricks that's so kind of you, I think you are far more slender than I am though!

I am thinking full length/calf length, I usually go for strapless or halter neck, I am not sure what suits me really in terms of style and colour. I might go into town at some point and have one of those personal shopper consultations and see what's what.

I've bought a few cocktail dresses from the following eBay seller -

In the past, I've bought quite a few formal dresses from TK Maxx but these days, they stock dresses which are more suited to prom queens, Bollywood films and Euro trash music videos.

Good luck with the search x

You have way too much time on your hands if you sign up to the forum just to advertise your own listing. BTW you've overpriced that dress

Yeah that dress is way overpriced for a second hand Ebay dress, you could get a brand new one for that price!

I usually do well in the Hobbs sales. Some things look old lady-ish, but I adore the NW3 and unlimited lines. And they often have quite good dresses i nthe online outlet for good prices: https://www.hobbs.co.uk/outlet/dresses/occasion-dresses?viewall=true

Haha I wondered why this thread had popped up again!

In the end I got this minus the flowery belt new with tags for £50 off ebay and plan to have it taken in a bit (very excitingly the 14 is far too big! hurrah!) and maybe a bit of spangly stuff adding if I can find a good dressmaker.
