Nick J re Koh Samui...

Pipkins Pig, 9 April, 2008 at 17:27 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

Hi there, I notice you know a bit about Koh Samui? mind if i ask a few questions?

Im planning the first 2 weeks in september, will it be hot and will there be lots of rain? i just learned that september is the start of the rain season!

Which is the better beach for lovely sand/swimming clear water, Lamai or Chaweng?

If we chose to stay on another beach such as Boput or Naten(SP) is there anything outside of the hotel without having to go in to town for meals/drinks etc?

And do you have any knowlege of these hotels.. Chaba cabana/Aloha resort.

thanks if you can help.

Pig!

Never been in sept, but when was there the beach bed guy said it was incredibly hot in august, and also that the sea is a long way out due to the tides. and, we were there in feb, and it rained then for 2 days. usually though when it rains it just pisses down for half anf hour then the sun comes out, so i wouldnt be that bothered by rainy season

lamai is nice but very quiet. the nicest beach on that side is the one along from chaweng beach, the one on which the sala samui hotel sits, cant remember the beach name. great sand, clear water.

bophut and nathon, nothing going on there at all, very quiet, and spread out, bit dull really.

dont know the hotels you mention, sorry.

Sorry to crash the thread. We stayed in Sala Saumi a couple of years ago - the beach was lovely. If you stay here I would recommend the private villas with pools.

There is little to do here and would not really recommend anywhere to eat in this part - would recommend you get a taxi and got into the town.

As for weather we were there for 2 weeks at the end of September. The weather was hot during the day - during the evening we had a couple of evenings where it chucked it down for about 1/2 hour and then cleared up. If I remember rightly I did occasionally need a wrap but no often.

    Enjoy.

As the person who stayed with NickJ in Sala Samui ...

I absolutely loved it. We usually stay in SLH hotels and did our research before we booked. Sala Samui ticked every box (apart from the large, noisy crowd in the corner?) You get all sorts. Definitely not child friendly although the staff are fantastic with them. Personally, at that price and a honeymoon type resort, not really fair on others to take children.

The food was great (Avoid Thai night - the only night that disappointed food wise). Masala's outside does some nice, cheap food. H had his massages in the dark tinted place next door to Masala's and raved about them. I went further down the road, same price but loved those too. We got our clothes that we didn't care about laundered in the motorbike/car hire place on the corner. About £4.00 for a week's washing. Anything nice we got the hotel to launder. This was about £5.00 for three pieces so not bad at all.

We are fussy and really loved it. The beach is absolutely fine, not perfect but not as bad as you would be led to believe on tripadvisor. The pools are pretty deserted and we were there in non-rainy season. I would ignore the seasons .. we got rain for half of our holiday. Global warming in its element.

The rooms have surround sound and you get DVDs from reception (never done this before - usually like to get off the beaten track). We didn't use taxis as the hotel ones were the same price, albeit plus tax.

If you do book Sala Samui and go out of the resort, don't ask to go back to Sala Samui as they double your taxi fare. Ask for Chaweng Beach and guide them back after you have fixed your fare.

I did find Koh Samui far more 'rip off' than any parts of Asia I've ever been but everyone has to make a living I suppose! Chaweng beach was a dive and wouldn't recommend. Fisherman's Village was far better but it still the same old tat.
