NickJ...or someone I have a leaven question :o)

Gryfon, 28 March, 2009 at 22:16 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 6

Mine arrived this morning and I've fed him and stuck him in the fridge. Will it be too soon for me to use some tomorrow? He's bubbling away to himself seemingly quite content already.

Anyone know? Or should I just use up the dried yeast I already have?

Hi, personally I would add the extra flour/water tomorrow and leave for 24 hours to bake on Monday.

Ok thanks. We're having a birthday party tomorrow which is why I wanted to use it so soon! ?

I suppose it would depend on what time you wanted to bake tomorrow. I know when I first received my leaven I refreshed it, left it a day, started it off 24 hours later and then baked 24 hours later. I usually refresh mine on a Saturday morning, stick it in a bowl with the extra flour and water on a sunday an d bake on a Monday. However, that's just me, someone elsxe may say differently. :-)

Well I've left it for now. Have loads of dried yeast that I need to use up. Handy for the breadmaker when I don't have time to do lots of kneading ?

Bob is bubbling loads now, I think he liked the very strong white flour I gave him!

Hmmm I don't think Talyn is very well. He hasn't really bubbled since I got him.

Oh dear! Bob makes a very satisfying "putt" sound when you open the lid and let the air out. Maybe your fridge is colder than mine?

We do have quite a cold fridge (the veggies freeze if we put them on the bottom shelve) - maybe he's just hibernating then ?
