Night Storage Heating

The Mrs, 19 May, 2009 at 14:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 5

Would this put you off buying a property? Have found a house that I like but it has this type of heating and was wondering if anyone had it. Is it more expensive? The energy cert is no worse then another that has gas central heating.

They would put me off, but not dramatically if the property was exactly right in all other ways.

Bear in mind they're best run on Economy 7 ... if that still exists?

They won't work until all the bricks inside have heated up.

They won't turn off until the bricks have cooled down.

Other than that, ok, I think.

Yep, economy 7 does still exist!

They do work out a little more expensive and it can be frustrating when you first have them as they take some getting used to but you do eventually work out how to become your own weather forecaster a day in advance to know when to turn them up/down/off.

They certainly aren't ideal though and it may be worth looking into replacing with central heating if it's a house you're planning on staying in a while as it may still work out cheaper in the long run.

I have them in my flat and we weren't planning on staying in there for more than 3 years so didn't bother replacing - wish we had now as will be here until market picks up again! Trick is to keep doors closed at all times in the Winter to keep the heat in as once the heat has gone out of the bricks you don't get any more until the next day!!!

I have them in my flat, and I'd much rather have proper central heating. However, as it's a rented place and I loved everything else about it, it was a bit of a no-brainer. If the price was right it wouldn't put me off buying somewhere, but I'd have to factor in the cost of installing central heating as a priority.

Storage heaters are ridiculous. Having to effectively decide a day in advance of needing heating really winds me up ?. It's particularly annoying if you've been away overnight, as I am a far bit, as you're then subjected to least a half day of chilliness until the bricks have heated up. Rubbish.

I've not had this type of heating but from what I've heard of it in the other posts on the thread it would put me off. If it's anything like Economy 7 then it would definitely put me off! If I loved the property and could afford to change the heating system then it wouldn't put me off, but if it's a choice between that and a house that I like the same but with gas central heating then the GCH will win hands down.

We rented a place with night storage and we were never warm. It wouldn't put me off buying a house though but would price installing central heating

It can have its upsides - for example if you are at home all day with maybe little ones or are elderly - I would think it would work out cheaper then. You needn't feel guilty about having the heating on all day. Not so ideal if you are out at work all day and come in late.
