No one to look after our dog

delvesje, 28 September, 2010 at 07:41 Posted on Planning 0 16

I had a call from my Mum last night to say that the friends that were going to look after our dog while we are away is not going to be able to it.

I cant put Ruby into kennels, she has been very badly treated in the past, kept in a shed and used as a breeding machine, 3 lots of pups by 2 years old.

I only ever leave her with my mum or these friends, Mum cant have her cos she is obviously coming to the wedding. I dont know what to do. I keep racking my brain to think of a friend that would come and house/ dog sit for us, but our friends work full time and have comitments of thier own.

My children cant help, my daughters dog hates ruby, my other daughter is at work all day,as is my eldest son and my other son is living in Amsterdam.

I think putting her in kennels would be terrifing for her, being shut in again, I know according to Ceaser Millan (the dog whisperer) that dogs "live in the moment" but I'm not sure I totally agree with him.

I realise that I am thinking aloud writting this.I have been awake nearly all night worrying about her.

Have you got any dog sitters in the area?

I have a Golden Retriever called Ruby! I have a dog sitter that looks after her in her own home, ask around.

What area do you live in Delvesje?

In my area there are quite a few dog sitters that go to your house 2 or 3 times a day and see to the dog, take them out etc.

What a nightmare - agree about kennels, I could never put my rescue dog in one, think he'd feel he'd been abandoned again.

Def try your vets for recommendations, dog sitter is a possibility or some people have dogs into their own homes to board while you're away

    Hope you find someone

I have just rung the vets, they gave me a couple of numbers, rang them and both are booked up.

I cant leave Ruby in the house alone, we are away during halloween and bonfire night. She is terrified of fireworks and she would never cope being left alone. Definatly need to find a nice holiday home for her. Back to the internet for me!

Where do you live & what dates are you wanting her looked after?

If you are anywhere near me (Yorkshire) she can come & stay with us. I have a gorgeous soppy golden retriever who loves other dogs, she would love a play mate & as I work from home there will be somebody here all day.

Plus we have miles & miles of countryside here so she would get some lovely walks.

I am in wetherby if that any good for you but I am going on my hols next week for 2 weeks

Let me know if I can help at all

    Debbie

Yes - where do you live!! tell us tell us!

You'll sort something - maybe even a local dog walking company could help or recommend someone.

I know what you mean about pets in kennels/catteries... I've always had my two cats 'house sat' with a lovely cat lady who comes in twice a day, and they don't have the trauma of going off into a cattery - but since I moved we're so remote, we'd never find anyone to do a similar service I doubt, so the boys will have to go into a cattery. They are 11 and 10, and I just don't know how they will cope! : (

Please don't worry - i'm sure something will come up.

    xx

I live in the portsmouth area. Thank you for your kind offer Debbie, but as you can see we live too far apart.x

We have a lovely lady who comes twice a day for the cats but she doesn't do dogs. and as I have said before I cant leave her on her own during the crazy firework season.

Portsmouth? Pants... I'm in Perthshire in Scotland : (( I'd have offered if we'd been closer - we live in a rural village where there won't be any fireworks, or if there are, minimal...

Too far for my suggestion too. My Auntie runs a dog holiday sitting service at her home, she always has dogs coming to stay. But she's in West Yorks, so no good for you.

I agree with others look for dog sitters, most charge around £10-15 per day and will have them in their own home so its a nice safe happy warm family environment. Try your local vets, google and also gumtree is good. We also have a dog and I am already worrying who will have him for the honeymoon, hes a gorgeous jack russell - my OH's parents live in Belfast in a small terrace with no garden and they arent used to dogs so that out, my dad has to tiny dogs which my dog will maul and my mum has a huuuuge garden which he will escape from! Nightmare!

I've been a babysitter on new years eve for 3 kids I'd never met before! It was fine except the parents tried to underpay me. ?

I live in Portsmouth, and I'm not a professional pet sitter, but I look after my parents dog and cat 2 or 3 times a year when they go off on their holidays.

Depending on what area of Portsmouth you live in I might be able to help if you're still looking for someone. ?

We were worried about who would look after our pet bunny when we get married next year, but the worst thing happened, and he passed away recently. [:'(]
