#nomakeup selfies

MummyMoo82, 20 March, 2014 at 12:53 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 83

What are people's views on this? I'm glad it's raising some money for charities but what about actual 'awareness' of cancer? Seems a bit vague to me. To be truly aware you need to know about spotting the signs etc, getting smears and all that so something which spreads that message is better. No?

Oh, it's preposterous. It's attention-seeking disguised as charity 'awareness' which doesn't actually achieve anything. I mean I have no issues with selfies, but call it what it is.

I was saying this yesterday - I'm no more 'aware' of cancer having seen your pout! However, now the Cancer Charities have cottoned onto it and are giving out donation numbers, I think they've made quite a bit of money. So I think it's a great idea, as long as you donate as well as post the picture!

It's ovarian cancer awareness month, I bet most people aren't 'aware' of that

My facebook feed is full of them and it's getting on my nerves a bit. It's ok if it's actually getting people to donate money or if they're donating themselves but all I see is girls getting compliments about how wonderful they look without makeup.

At first I was against it and thought it was another stupid idea like the secret bra colour things that go around. However, because there's been so much talk about it, and people have called others on it reminding them it means very little without a donation, money really is being donated now. I haven't done one myself as I stood up against my friends in the beginning and I'm stubborn and won't back down, but I have changed my opinion slightly now. And I have made a donation

It's ridiculous, I'm no more aware of cancer, I have not learnt anything new about cancer.

If you want to donate, just donate, don't post a picture fishing for compliments and likes and then brag about the donation you made...just do it.

My friend argued that it was good that people who couldn't afford to donate were 'thinking about it' and my reply that if she was really bothered she should volunteer at a shop or at a fundraising event fell on deaf ears.....not THAT bothered about making a difference.

To begin with it was purely self congratulatory nonsense. The only thing it raised awareness of was the person in the photo.

However, since some major backlash (from myself included) reminding people that tagging a photo of themselves with 'cancer awareness' means nothing without donation and/or some actual informative advice on cancer detection - donations are now coming in.

I firmly believe that without the backlash it would have carried on with no one donating and all it would have served is to tell people how lovely they look. Hardly productive.

It's got everyone talking - if they then go on to learn something about the signs of cancer, then great. and the money raised is fabulous.

Also, the only reason Cancer Research UK have received so many donations is because they had the good sense to jump on the bandwagon.

Wouldn't it have been lovely if the person who actually started it had thought of something so simple to make such a vain thing have actual meaning?

One of my friends has posted one of a male friend of hers with his danglies tucked between his legs so you can't see them - it's kind of disturbing seeing a man I might one day meet at her wedding completely starkers!!!

I was skeptical at first and had absolutely no idea how it was meant to be “raising awareness of cancer” or helping in anyway. Now the charities have got involved and people are donating/forwarding signs to look out for etc then it’s doing some good.

Luckily for me, most of my close friends are too sensible to have gotten into this, so I have been able to keep well clear of it all. If I am nominated I will do it, but I will also post a screen shot of my charity donation, so that people don't forget what the whole thing is supposed to be about.

I donated, but I didn't post a selfie. 1) I don't want people seeing me without make-up and 2) I want to look fit in my selfies, not a mong.

More importantly, I think, it doesn't raise awareness AT ALL. It might get people donating, but that doesn't mean people are going to check their bits.

    It's peeing me off.

I donate to Cancer research regularly and take part in things like GSR and R4L. My Nan is terminal FFS.

I don't need to post a photo of myself make-up less to prove that I support something. And I definitely do not need to post a screen shot of my phone to prove I've sent a text. Just do it and STFU.

I'm not even sorry about this outburst. Every post I see just makes me think of my poor suffering Nana (and also, 'how much chuffing make-up do you normally wear?!')

This! I am really surprised how different everyone looks, I had no idea they all wore make up every day. If I did a no make up selfie it would just be a picture of me, as I don't wear that much make up on a day to day basis.

Do you know what, to start with I just thought it was stupid, but if it's raised £1m for charity then it can't all be bad. Ok maybe it's not raising awareness but it is helping the charity.

I thought the whole point in the beginning was that you either donated to charity or you had to pose without makeup? I don't understand why anyone feels the need to do both.

I think that's more to do with the fact that people like me have said 'how is this helping the charity, shouldn't you donate?'

The problem was that everyone was choosing the latter. And I actually don't think that was the premise. Apparently it was purely to 'raise awareness'. Because none of us were aware of cancer...

In a way though, if you think about it, the backlash has got so many people talking about cancer and self-examination and then obviously, the surge of donations which would not have happened without the originally self-indulgent nonsense, so every cloud...!

Cancer is something that touches most of us in some way unfortunately, so I think it is maybe a bit silly to think anyone is unaware of it. I lost my uncle two years ago, my aunty the year before that, an old school friend this year, another aunty has also recently been diagnosed, as has my H's step-sister, my SIL's Dad died in January and I've had my own scares with lumps and smears in the past (thankfully it was nothing). It seems to be all around me at the moment so anything that can help in the fight against it has to be a positive thing.

I've got my smear tonight but it's been booked for weeks.

I always check my norks, discovered I had a lipoma in one of them a few years ago and had it removed but I only knew it was something because of how often I feel my boobs.

I do think it's amazing how much money has been raised, but I have to agree with Harvo, I wonder how much would have been donated without people being objective and questioning how a selfie is "raising awareness" I think, not alot, but hey ho, CRUK are up a million quid so something pretty excellent has come out of it.

I'd love it if it did spur people on to do so, but who knows!

I regularly check my boobs, had a smear last year, and I am pale with numerous moles so keep a good eye on them. (Having one off in 2 weeks in fact just in case) but I think those of us who have been closely affected by cancer are more aware to do these things (?) hopefully if this no make up thing reaches those people and prompts them to check it will have done some good.
