Non Supplier Emails?

Sherrie H, 10 October, 2010 at 21:52 Posted on Planning 0 39

Has anyone had emails from non HIB's/Suppliers?

I've had a few this weekend. Picking a Mod to email= Not a wise move!

I've had about 5 this week. Most got grabbed by my spam box though!

I repeatedly get one with 'wedding planning discussion forum' or something like that in the subject line, then when I open it it's always from the same person saying they're based in China and 'make lovely wedding dress for you'. I just mark them as spam and move on.

    Hi Sherrie

Not specifically targeted emails but got a sudden stream of email notifications yesterday from a thread I'd posted to the other week even though I thought I'd opted out of notifications.

I have noticed there seems to be a little core of newish Hibs who appear to email anyone who mentions they're looking for certain items, which I think is a bit bad form. Don't think old Hitched would let them get away with that. ️?️

ETA: I think there was a lot of very old thread bouncing going on this weekend too by some planning website.

    Hi Suz

This is the reason I ask as it is not allowed in the Hitched Rules to email any member if you are not a paid supplier.

I have deleted the said person who was bouncing threads.

How are they actually finding our email addresses...? Mine isn't on my profile anywhere, I don't think....

Sammy they send it through Hitched, if you send an email you just have to use the contact or send email feature & it automatically comes through to the email address you registered with.

    My email is *****@************.***

You have your email address for signing in. On your profile there is "Send (uersname) an email" and by doing that you reveal your email to the person at the other end, so you can then respond directly off-board if you want to.

It would be much better if there was some sort of 'private message' system (like most forums) rather than emailing - and I never really figured out 'conversations' either, rather than giving out your personal email address to other members (after all, a lot of people would probably rather keep their emails private).

The alternative of course is to use a web based email (Hotmail, Gmail, etc) address for signing up to anything like this, and keeping your 'main' email address just for family and close friends.

    Got it thanks.

That member has been dealt with now so you shouldn't recieve any more emails.

I thought it was not allowed at all, especially by HIB listed suppliers? I always thought the email facility was if Brides wanted to contact suppliers themselves to ask for quotes/help etc and that HIB's weren't allowed to "fish" for business by tracking threads. I'm suprised that they allow paid HIB's to do this as it's not really professional and if I were a Bride, I certainly wouldn't want HIB's touting me for business.

I haven't received anything myself Sherrie connected with Hitched but I have had a couple of companies contact me via another wedding directory which I just deleted.

You are right Brenda, apart from being very unprofessional it is breaking the rules. If someone emailed me I would immediately think they were desperate for Business!

Ajdown: the Conversation facility is a Private Messaging system. If you look in the top right hand corner of the forum you will see " Conversations" in yellow. This is your private msgs. So if you want to msg a member you go to their profile & start conversation.

    Hi Sherrie and Brenda

I'm glad I'm not the only one who hates this. I've seen loads of threads recently where a bride/groom has merely mentioned something like a colour or certain item and a few suppliers have replied with "I've just sent you an email" even though not specifically asked for. It makes me cringe.

Me too! Not only does it smack of desperation but it could put off some members from asking for help which is mainly what most of us HIB's are more than happy to do without any hidden agenda.

It's one of the main reasons why I don't post much anymore as I don't want to be associated with it.

I thought you'd been quiet of late PW ... but yes, please come back! Your advice on here is v valuable for the brides, and interesting to boot to non brides!

Yikes, am trying to think have I jumped on any thread inappropriately! I've certainly never emailed anyone directly (other than HIBs to ask advice!) tho' ... and I think the few photos I've posted of my stuff has been in direct response to 'please post photos/ideas' ... but it does make you think! Much like with wedding exhibitions, I'd hate to be seen as a pushy supplier, and I'm defo on here more with general chit chat I think than business related stuff!

Have to say, generally I think Hitched is slowly heading back to where it used to be on WP. Its not overly fluffy, its getting a bit busier (it doesn't take quite so long for the front page posts to bump down), and I'm enjoying being back on here ... its not quite the old days but ... and lots of newbies which is what we need - newbies are our life blood!

I think it's incredibly bad form to email someone and offer a service just because they have started a thread about something. I think if you can provide something and you say so on the thread then the person will contact you if they want your help.

I had the opposite problem LOL! I tried to email another Hitcher buddy via the forum and it came back two days later as undelivered but my Hitched account is all to pot at the moment and Dean is trying to sort it out for me. So if anyone is trying to contact me could I ask if you could contact me via my email address on my website rather than via Hitched until we get things sorted out - thanks!
