Non-alcoholic drink suggestions needed please

Kegsey, 19 January, 2009 at 15:35 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 17

H is off alcohol under doctors orders for three weeks. Its a bit of a worry while they work out what the problem is and I don't want him to feel deprived in the meantime so I need some non-alcoholic (NA) suggestions for him. Is there a good NA beer? Any recipes for NA margharitas? What can I substitute for wine? Some nice drink? I can think of Ame or Shlur (sp?) but anything else?

Becks isn't too bad, obv. it's not like the real thing (and don't bother with any of the wines) but it's a fair substitute and isn't bad as a shandy with lemonade. I drank it now and then when pregnant.

I was trying to remember which Hitcher's H had a docs appointment. What was the outcome then?

I find grape juice pretty good, if it's too sweet mix with sparkling water. It has the added bonus of looking like wine, which seems to help ?

We had some low alcohol Stella last week and it's actually rather nice. It's 0.5% so not sure if that still counts towards his "not allowed". This seems to be 0.0% http://www.alcoholfree.co.uk/product_info.php?cPath=2_12&products_id=229

I know this is going to sound flippant, but its not intended to be, but for 3 weeks couldnt he just drink soft drinks, seeing as its to do with a health scare. 3 weeks with no alcohol isnt that difficult, to make sure that blood tests etc are giving a true reading.

Hope he is ok and that the next set of tests come back ok for him.x

I find most non-alcoholic drinks sickly sweet unfortunately, especially for having with food. Home-made lemonade, with sweetener isntead of sugar, is nice, as is slimline tonic.

Thanks! I suspected non-alcoholic wine wouldn't be good.

It was me. I posted earlier but easy to miss. His liver levels weren't any lower but Hep B/C were clear. Cholesterol was OK too. But he has enlarged blood cells which is a pointer to alcohol problems but another test which is also an indicator to alcohol problems was normal. So doc has said no alcohol for 3 weeks and he is going to have an ultrasound on his liver (and more blood tests I assume). He does drink but within recommended limits and has 3-4 alcohol free days a week normally so its a bit strange.

I find non alcoholic Becks very drinkable.

    Cobra is OK

Kalibre is just rank - stay away.

I made some nice 'cocktails' on xmas day mixing ginger beer with Sainsburys TTD Pomegranate and Rose Presse (plus ice, squeeze of lime and some mandarin segs). Tastes like sherbet

I'm off alcohol at the moment due to pregnancy.

I'm drinking appletise, peartise, fruitise etc, which are nice but can be a bit sweet. Ame and Schloer aren't quite as sweet. Cloudy lemonade and ginger beer are nice if I wan't something a bit sharper, as are the Schweppes soft drinks. All soft drinks are very sugary, though, unless you go for the 'low cal' ones, in which case it's just as sweet but with the bitter aftertaste from the sweeteners.

Things like J2Os are nice as well, or just fruit juice with some sparkling water.

If I want something to drink with a meal or in a pub, I usually just have sparkling water.

I personally don't really rate non-alcoholic versions of alcoholic drinks. They don't taste like the drinks they're trying to imitate, and to be honest I don't think I'd ever drink beer if it didn't have alcohol in it ?

ETA - a customer at work once had to give up alchohol on Drs orders for about a year because he had strange results from a liver function test. Apparently he had some kind of syndrome which had no symptoms but "makes your doctor think you're an alcy"

No, not flippant and he might prefer that route anyway - I'm just trying to find alternatives. We have 2 out of the 3 weekends with friends and one in particular is normally a very beery do. I was hoping to find a reasonable alcohol free beer so he doesn't bring so much attention to himself - explaining lump on testical and possible alcohol problems is going to embarress him no end.

    Thankyou ?

H could always use the old “I’m on antibiotics” in defence of his non drinking, easier to explain than the lump etc

Becks alcohol free beer is good if you like becks, prefer the bavaria no alcohol beer personally

Im glad you didnt think I was being arsey! I know that Ive not come across a decent NA beer and Id prefer to stick to the soft stuff, rather than tantalize me with NA beer that would only make me want to drink the proper stuff! lol

Seems that most non-alcoholic beers are actually 0.05% - although Bavaria is 0%.

The anti-biotics thing is an idea - although we'll see one person on both weekends and 2-3 weeks on anti-bs might be stretching it a bit.

Thanks for your suggestions and comments everyone. At least he has some options even if he prefers to stick to his normal water and juice.

No, not at all. Comments like yours are why posting on a forum is good - you don't just get answers to your questions but you get a different way of looking at it.

I don't know if he'll want to try NA beer or stick to soft drinks. I'll stop drinking with him so he's not tempted/feels hard done to but the weekends with friends will be harder - particularly one which is all beer and board games. He'll manage though.

Good luck to him, he could always make a joke of why he is on the soft stuff and say that he is pregnant or something. That might shut his mates up lol

I am preg and my pub drink of choice is currently ginger beer or lemonade with a dash of angostura bitters (again slightly alcoholic tho I think). If I am driking low alc beer I tend to have a lemon wedge in it to add to the taste a bit.

I'm also pregnant and can't get enough Virgin Mary's at the moment - although it may not be something your H will want to drink in the pub! Alcohol free Becks also gets my vote for a NA beer.

Thankyou - have run suggestions past H and have got major browny points for all my research ?. Will check out the supermarkets for Bavaria beer and nice NA drinks. He liked the idea of grape juice with water but not tomato juice! I think the next 3 weeks will be fine and we'll see then if alcohol is the problem or not. Even if it isn't, I think this might change our drinking habits.
