Non-floral Centrepieces?

teapotty, 6 April, 2013 at 15:40 Posted on Planning 0 16

I have bought lots of teacups and teapots for our centrepieces and originally planned to have florist fill them with fresh flowers. However, due to financial constraints I now can;t have fresh flowers - anyone got any alternatives? I'm not really having colour scheme but my BMs are having purple flowers Smiley smile

When are you getting married? If later in the summer you could plant seeds now for lots of pretty flowers for next to no money!

How about colourful sweets? You can get cheap jellybeans etc that will add a lot of colour for a cheap price? Or you could make some scones/flapjacks/macaroons and pile them with them? Don't necessarily have to be eaten but could work with the tea theme and would be fairly cheap and easy to make? We were looking at spray-painting twigs to put in vases but not sure if this would work for teacups/tea pots.

I like MOMB's idea about the seeds - I think that would look really pretty.

How about grouping them together in the centre of the table - say 1 teapot with two cups and saucers and have a large gingerbread man stood in between them? Or a plate of biscuits? Another idea would be to have different teas on each table from around the world. Have to confess that I don't particularly like cups and saucers with flowers in as the vintage ones are so pretty anyway, they don't really need an addition.

I like the picture of the ones with a single flower in. How about petals or a floating tea light? Ask round family if you can cut flowers from their gardens lavender, roses, wharever is out at the time

We had a teacup each as a favour and then we had cake stands as the centre pieces. The teacups we used a place settings so they had a luggage tag attached with the name of the guest on them and then they had live hearts in them. Sorry if that sounds hard to picture I will see if I can find a photo later!

If you had enough tea cups for each guest, could you put a cup cake in each one? It could also double as a place name when iced. The teacups can sit around the teapot.

You can also get floating candles. Put teacups around the teapot. Fill 3/4 with water (which could be tinted with food colouring to your theme colours) then add the floating candle. Some candles are a round, waxed candle. I ahve also seen a type where you pour a small amount of oil on top of the water, then sit a plastic holder with a wick inside. This type will still show any decoartion within the teacup & looks like a flame floating on the water. You could also add a fragrance oil to them.

The teapot could be left as it is, or have a single flower come out the top. What about growing herbs in the teapots? Or getting old, beaded necklaces from charity shops to drape over them.

If you have a spring/summer wedding you could use mini flowering plants from a market/garden centre...just take them out of the plastic pots and plant them into the teapots/teacups...you should be able to get mixed trays of viola/pansies which are so pretty and really fit into a vintage theme...bedding plants are widely available and cheap throughout spring and summer months and come in every colour imaginable :-)

This is probably going to sound really stingy but you can often pick up reduced flowers at Asda. They only need to last the day and they often sells bunches for like £1-£1.50. If you only put one flower in each cup then you'd only need a couple of bunches.

It would mean leaving it til the last minute though.

Thanks for the suggestions Smiley smile I actually thought about going to the supermarket for flowers too and don't think that's stingy at all!

I think I have solved the problem - was looking through my wedding stuff and found some artificial roses from Laura Ashley I bought ages ago!
