Not a child but not an adult Bridesmaid! *Update with flash*

Marylou-lou, 23 October, 2010 at 17:35 Posted on Planning 0 19

Hi there,

I need your help for ideas and inspiration. Our daughter will be nearly aged 15 when we get married and she is to be our only bridesmaid. The problem I have is not many bridesmaids dresses are suitable for a 15 year old. She is at that in-between stage of growing and self-conscious of her body.

I would ideally love a modern twist of dress with cap sleeves that cover her back and not too revealing at the front. All the ones I've looked at would make her look ridiculous, too old, strapless or like Heidi. Someone must have an appropriate dress for a 15 year old to show me? Please!!

I feel your pain. My two BMs are my teenage stepdaughters - they will be 14 and 15 when we get married, and both have totally opposite body sizes. I've really struggled trying to find the right style that will suit both, but I have since decided that the eldest - who is very tiny for her age will look better in a knee length style, and the youngest, who is big for her age, will suit a longer length style. I've found a lady who designs and makes according to each individual. whilst, i don't have a photo of the exact style that Ive gone for, they're very similar to the below.

    /bridesmaid-dresses/aftersix/

these may not be the same sort of style you're looking for, and I know what you mean about cap sleeves, as the youngest of mine, is very conscious of her arms, shoulders etc and didn't want too much on show - but she would have been happy with either sleeves or a bolero, which I was happy to do.

the other thing I struggled with, was getting them to try dresses on now, as I found that what may not suit them today, may well do in 1yrs time when we get married, and it was veryhard to visualise how they could look. We didn't try too many dresses on, but they tried on a few and from that I realised what style and shape would flatter both of them.

If you go to a proper bridal store, don't forget that lots of them can alter the dress to suit - I had some stores saying they could quite easily put straps on strapless dresses, shorten them, etc, so I really do think you need to trawl around and see what suits your daughter best.

    Hi,

What about an alter net style dress?, one that crosses over at the front, not so revealing.voice your concerns with the bridle shop, they will advise you on this. ?

Thanks for your imput - I'm glad there are other people in the same boat. Not only that but getting her to agree to try anything on is a nightmare. Although she agreed to be bridesmaid I think she's more interested in the playlist at the night time venue. The only dress that kind of suits her style I've found on Ebay from China. It's a nice cocktail knee length affair but still not happy about the top half- She doesn't want to look like a sausage wrapped in clingfilm (her words!) I'm not having pink anyway - It's green!

I have a similar problem - 13 year old niece. However, it's the other way round for me - she wants a strapless revealing thing and I want her in something a little more modest!

I've picked out several styles that might work so I'm negotiating with her:

At least she gets to choose - I didn't get any choice when I was a bridesmaid, I had to wear whatever the bride said.

My bridesmaids were my neices of 11 and 13, we actually got them adult dresses in debenhams which my mum took in. They wore them with straps and they had a beaded cape to wear them as well, they looked stunning and not tarty in the least....

the younger one - now 13 - wore it to another wedding recently!

One of my BM's was my step-daughter, she's 11. I was stressing about her dress as I didn't want her to end up looking either too old or too young. In the end we got her dress from BHS and it was perfect. A lot of places do junior bridesmaids dresses, try www.foreverbridals.com they do 3 ranges of BM dresses (child, junior and adult) xxx

My niece will be nearly 11 so quite a bit younger, but we've had the same quandary as she is really too old for a 'little' dress but far too young for an adult dress.

Alfred Angelo do "mini" and "Junior" versions of their adult dresses, and most of their adult dresses also come with straps. We've gone for this dress for all 3 adults and the junior version for the younger girl, so she will be in the same style as the adults but in a younger version.

Hope you find a lovely dress for her ?

Have you thought about designing a dress so they can both have some input? Im in a similar boat, only in that both my bridesmaids are sooooo completely different in shaped and size, and one has double HH boobs, but only a size 12 waist I am having to have the dresses made inorder to get something the same that will fit them both.

Found this website, they are actually based near me in N london. U can design the dress, colour, legth etc and have them made and sent. If u needed have 2 different style dresses to suit their figures, but in the same material so it matches.

    http://www.styleshake.com/

They are in the UK too so if there are problems they are easier to address, than a shop in china, which is wat im worried about.

Marks and spencers have got some great dresses in just now. They might not be bridesmaidy enough for a lot of people though. My 15 year old is also one of my bridesmaids. I am thinking of going with the last black dress with ivory belt.

I know it hasnt got sleeves, but this is what my 13yr old wore this saturday as my BM. I got it from Topshop, and teamed with pumps it kept it young and fresh

Hi again, thank you for all your imput. Your daughter's dress is really pretty and fresh Charlied.

I have finally made a decision and ordered the dress I know she would most appreciate without looking like an Amish teenager.

Here it is in that colour. Not the style I thought of originally but one we are both happy with. It's funky and young without being too clingy or revealing. Best of all it has an elasticated back panel so it'll be comfortable all day and fit her without having to alter it nearer the wedding.

It's from Ebay China seller at £16.20! I have ordered a dress from the seller before so know the quality and service is good.
