Not quite sure if IBU, but I've got the rage!

Peaches, 16 June, 2009 at 03:36 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

We're moving house, and today we had the full inspection (same as a full structural survey). It took all afternoon and lasted until early evening. As we were leaving our next door neighbour drove up coming home from work.

He said hello and then asked how things were going. I was going to drive away as we had another meeting to go to, but Mr P stopped to talk to him (we were in separate cars, so I walked back to see what was what, and be a nice neighbour!)

Anyway, after lots of discussion about the inspection, he asked if we knew about certain things he'd noted outside the house.

Then, he went all shy and said there was something else ... so we pressed him as he didn't want to tell us.

Turns out he, his wife and his in-laws let themselves in through the unlocked side door (the builders frequently leave the doors unlocked ?) and took a tour of the house! These were his words, not mine. He said that he noticed there was a leak in an upstairs bathroom which resulted in sodden carpets, ceilings downstairs and walls .. to the point of full wet floors downstairs.

Thankfully we knew about this, and one of the ceilings has already been replaced, but WTF were they doing in there in the first place?! Mr P would have 40 fits if I said I wanted to check out a new house next door and go show the ILs round. If it was wide open, not sold and hadn't met the people moving in, then fair game, but not at this late stage.

Am I being unreasonable in your eyes in seeing red? I don't want to get off on a bad foot before we already move in, but bugger me, it's a class above being nosey, isn't it? They've already admitted they've been into the house on a near daily basis to see how it was coming on, but now it's sold, surely it's off limits?

What would you have said, if anything?

NB: These are the people who think it's highly amusing to put a snake's head in a jar and put it in their 29 year old daughter's bed when she was visiting as a laugh (he killed it on his patio). Strange folk!

Are you sure you sure you want to live beside someone like that?!

I'd be raging too, if my neighbours had done the same thing, but I guess you can't do alot about it now! At least you know there a nosey lot.....

I was just about to post again to say I'm probably over-egging it saying I have the rage, but I'm definitely not best pleased. I have visions of them knocking on the door at all hours .. just get that vibe from them. He has already done that twice when we've been in the house - once walked in when the front door was wide open!

Our current neighbours both sides are total hermits. In fact, in the 2 years we've been here neither of us have seen the wife of one couple. Our landlords only saw her once in the 2 years they lived here.

Somewhere between hermit and nosey feckers would be nice!

Make sure you get the developer to lock up onsite at the end of everyday, for insurance as much as to keep the nosy neighbours out

I'd be furious and making sure the place was locked up to deter them (after Mr Rabbit bought his flat we found the previous owner was still letting himself in whilst we painted it etc. - needless to say we got the locks changed asap)

I know things are different in the US but even so, its a little bit over the line, isn't it. Hope you can find a way to keep them out in the future

WTF! Jesus, I'd be bloody incandescent with rage! No wonder you're mad, what a bloody liberty - intruding on your home - I know it's not at the "home" stage yet, but still! I suppose you have to bite your tongue if you're living next to these weirdies.

The first thing we do when we buy a house is change the locks. It seems common sense to me. In this case I would also be making the garden secure. What a weirdo! I guess maybe 'boundaries' are different in the states?

Freaky bloke. In my experience it's not that unusual though - people often want to look at something other than the model home, and until you move in they feel it's fair game.

It's a difficult line to establish with neighbors - you don't want them popping over all the time, but you don't want them to hate you.

Sounds like this bloke will require some careful handling in order to get him to back-off without being offended. I'm sure you can manage it!

Pah, Stelly, I'm not so sure! I'm one of those people who (according to the Meyer-Briggs evaluation) who tends to bottle things up and then it all comes out wrong!

According to a friend of mine it happened to her too. So perhaps the Yanks feel it's fair game? Either way, I don't like it, and it pisses me off that the builders leave the house open. They've already had some expensive lights nicked (which involved having to replace part of the ceiling as the thieves damaged it), so you'd think they'd learn. Mexican builders don't seem to give a toss!

Oh, and don't get me started on the way they leave the loos ?

When we had work done on our house a few years ago, every single builder/electrician/plumber took a long visit to my toilet, every day they were here. DISGUSTING. I was in there with wipes and bleach every day when they left.

I am selling a house at the mo that is due to close in a few weeks. The wife had been in FL, but came back up to help pack up. She was home the other day, 3PM when she saw a man pull up the (long, secluded) driveway in his car, get out and let himself into the backgarden. She was really scared. She said he was just wandering around the pool and deck. She went out and confronted him, turns out he is the Father of one of the purchasers. Just took it upon himself to wander around her property. He didn't even apologise - said he was checking to see if the pool had been opened yet. Grrrrr. I had to call the other agent and tell him to read his purchaser the riot act. Totally unacceptable. You can bet if she hadn't come out he would have tried to doors to see if he could get in.

Probably not what you want to hear but, if a house was being built next to my house and I had the opportunity to nip in and have a nose, before it was done, I would. He may not have known it had been purchased?

I don't think it makes them freaks or people who would be nosey or nightmare neighbours.

Oh Luth, they know all right! We first saw the house back in April when our Green Cards arrived - the very next day after getting them, and it was the first house we stumbled upon. Since then we've been to the house more times than I've posted on Hitched, and have met this couple endless times.

I've had a chat with some friends I met up with today who all say that it's out of order. And they're American! I thought it was my British-ness and my incessant desire for privacy (nothing new there to old Hitchers .. remember my automated gates for privacy many moons ago?), but it seems that even the Americans say this is off limits.

The house has been carpeted. They know it's sold. They tried the doors and took the In Laws on a tour. They themselves have been in almost every day (they admitted that!!), so I guess it's fair game in their eyes. Not in mine though!

To top off an already stressful day, I now have a Siemans Engineer who fitted a new electric meter at the UK rental house (the one that was torched) texting me being all friendly and asking if I'm having a wonderful holiday in the sun in America! Argh! One text is fair enough, but he's texted me SEVEN times!!

Clearly I'm attracting wierdos ATM. Do they do a spray for that? Like mosquito spray?! ?
