Not really sure what to put here

Chicken, 6 July, 2009 at 22:14 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 90

My beloved Buster had to be put down this morning. I only found out when I got home in from work at 8.30ish. I can't quite believe he's gone and I'm not really sure what to do with myself. He was 14 and a half and an absolute sweetheart. Anyone have any idea when this will stop hurting? I'm absolutely gutted.

Oh god Chooks, i'm so so sorry ?

Reading your post has really put a lump in my throat and taken me back to the day we lost our dog, I really didn't think i'd ever get over it, he'd been a family member for as far back as my memory went. I know how hard it is and really don't know what else to say other than it will stop hurting but takes time. I wish I could say something more meaningful.

Oh, Chicken, I am so sorry to hear about Buster. It's just like when someone dies, and probably never stops hurting properly. But in time you'll take pleasure in all the happy memories - you must have tons after 14 1/2 years Smiley smile

    Big hugs to you ?

Oh God, Lovely, I'm so so sorry to hear that. What a shock that must be for you.

I don't know what to say to make anything any better, although I wish there were something. My heart is breaking for you, sweetheart, I know how devoted you are.

Please please please let me know if there's anything I can do, I mean it. You know where I am if you need me, I am always here for you ?

Oh no, Chicken, I'm so sorry. ?

Of course you're gutted, it's just like losing any other member of your family. It will get better, but you need to allow yourself time to grieve for him.

Chook I am so, so sorry. I wish I could give you a big hug (even though you'd hate it).

You know where I am if you need a sympathetic ear ?

Oh Chicken, I am so, so sorry ?

In my experience the hurt and loss never really goes away, just like when you lose a human friend, the pain gets easier and you eventually stop thinking of them everyday but it's always there in the background. Maybe I'm just a looper but 20 months on I still have days when I think of our dog and find myself upset and I didn't live with him (he was mine all through my teens but when I left home a few years ago I left him with Mum)...

We learnt many years ago when our first family dog died that the best thing for us was to have another dog pretty soon, so when Ollie died we started looking for a new pup within a few days. I know that might sound harsh but for us, and my Mum especially, an empty house was just too unbareable - although I know others who years on still can't think about another dog.

I don't usually do fluffy and find it hard to show my emotions but what really helped me was a poem the crematorium sent with his ashes - I don't want to upset you but if you think it might help I can post it.

Thinking of you, and Buster x

You won't for a little while, lovely, because it's been a huge shock to you.

It's only just happened and you need to be kind to yourself, when our cat died we had him cremated and have kept his ashes in a lovely box with his name on, it's a real comfort to see him there when I go to my mums, and I in no way had the connection that you did with Buster. Maybe that would help eventually.

I think you need to give yourself some time, it's perfectly ok to grieve and take time for yourself, sweetheart. ?

I can only echo what Petal says buddy, you've suffered a huge loss here - be kind to yourself and don't try and force yourself not to be upset ?

Oh no I'm sorry. We had my boxer put to sleep 3 years ago and I still feel sad sometimes (usually about kerazy things like "ah he never got the chance to meet my current dog and they'd have got on so well!) It hurts so much when they go, like if any family member dies. ?

    RIP Buster

I'm all over the place. Trying hard not to be melodramatic and all that but he really was my little boy. I just want him back. Feel a bit broken.

    Thanks again all. Night.

Such sad news - we have had to say goodbye to a few dogs and it is awful - i think it is even harder when they dont live with you because it takes longer to come to terms with them having gone

i still miss them all - nothing takes that away - but in time it is less painful

thinking of you and your lovely boy xx

Chook, the most upset I've ever seen my Dad (an sensitive soul at the best of times) is when we had to have our cat put down when I was about 9. He wept buckets.

Hope you manage to get some sleep.
