Now TV or Netflix

cinnamon009, 14 July, 2014 at 13:21 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

Hello lovely otters, just wondered if people had opinions on these two?

Currently have sky but my special offer for moving from o2 has come to an end and they aren't offering any deals so considering moving back to a freesat box for the free channels and then getting either

  • Now TV box (one off £10) which enables me to sign up for Sky's Now TV - the basic entertainment package is £5 pm which gives me sky channels but no Netflix or
  • the Robu stick, which gives a wider range of streaming including Netflix but no Sky channels. It isn't clear from Netflix what their prices per month are unless you sign up for a free month first but they start from £6 pm.

I've heard mixed reviews on Netflix - people who have had sky for a period of time say most of the stuff on Netflix is 'out of date' ie if you are up to date on your favourite shows you will have to wait quite a while before 'new' episodes come online. Not many people have Now TV so not sure how it compares.

Any opinions?

I don't find Netflix that great TBH and I haven't even got Sky!

I think if you phoned Sky and said you want to cancel they will give you a deal. I cancelled ours and they must have phoned me 10 times with different offers

Yeah, Netflix isn't great for choice or being up to date. If you watch it through a PC or games console and hook it up to get the American version, it's much better.

We have Netflix and use it a lot, but mostly via the American site!

Like others have said, US Netflix is better.

We phoned Sky, saying we were cancelling, and they gave us reduced line rental for a year, and 3 months free movie channels.

I have Netflix and use it most days. I also have a youview box which is really good and could be the sort of thing you are after?

This is an interesting read. We were thinking about getting Netflix but this has put me off. Maybe we should stick with Sky and Lovefilm.

Similar kind of thing but from the little bit of research I have done so far, as I already have Sky satellite set up I am better off using freesat for normal tv channels and recording which goes through the satellite rather than youview which is freeview and therefore uses a digital aerial connection for the normal tv side (the broadband bit is used for on demand/catch up). I don't have a digital aerial at the mo but I have a sat dish - so my understanding is that freeview isn't an option for me unless I pay for a new aerial.

From what I have read so far there doesn't seem to be a freesat box that also accesses something like Netflix? You can get a limited amount of on demand tv on freesat but if I want movies and tv box sets I need a supplement. I can keep my sky+ box to watch the free channels through but it won't record once I have unsubscribed.

So then my options appear to be - to get wider tv series/movies etc to get a plug in as mentioned above so then I need to choose between Now TV or Netflix. One device might do both but as they are subscription only services I only want to pay one subscription. The Nox TV box is only £10 but the cheapest Netflix box is £40. I'm typing this all out so anyone else thinking about the same might benefit from my bit of research!!

Do you subscribe to Now TV through youview too? How do you watch your Netflix - is it through youview box or your laptop/xbox?

Thank you to anyone who gives any help. As you can see I am only just wading through the vast new techno info on this. My OH has a smart tv at his house in Yorkshire (which we use rarely) and when the kids are there they log in to their mum's Netflix account on it but I've never had a chance to look at it personally as funnily enough H2B's ex-wife hasn't given us the log in details. Based on the crap we have to watch when the kids log on though I would have said it has nothing on it. ?

We have Netlix and costs us £6 a month, we use it a lot though, they have some good series on there that are exclusive to them. The filsm on the other hand are mostly pretty naff.

I have heard good things about Now TV though, the only reason i am not moving is we are hooked on a couple of the series haha!

We cancelled Sky and moved to BT, for the full package we are saving around £50 a month (internet etc included) and haven't missed anything!
