NYC Breakfast - UPDATED with thanks!! (FAO Lobster)

Hepburn, 26 May, 2009 at 14:54 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 12

H and I are off to NYC for a couple of nights in August and want to find somewhere tremendous for breakfast on the Saturday morning. We'll be staying near Times Sq but don't mind travelling to a different area.
Previously we've had breakfast at whatever place we stumble across but this time we want to find somewhere that's really special.
We're after a proper big NY breakfast, quite a nice setting but not too posh, something comfy and trendy with great breakfasts, and £ isn't too much of an issue, outside would be good as it'll be August but not essential.
Where would you go for the above?! TIA

I went to Essex on Suunday for Brunch Lobster, thanks so much for the recommendation! We all loved it and it was tremendous! ?

What a fantastic place to eat and relax. They did my mum a birthday cake and let us relax at our table for hours despite the place being heaving and people queuing out the door.

Food was great and the FOC cocktails included were a great idea on the restaurant's part.

Thanks again! xx

Chat 'n' Chew - just off Union Square on E16th - The best breakfast burritos and blueberry pancakes. Mmmm.

La Bonboniere 8th ave and 12th Street - tiny place with the most amazing food. Apparently Ethan Hawke goes there, but I sadly didn't see him.

The Lyric Diner 3rd ave and 22nd Street - rookie cops and priests having coffee. Soooo New York! ?

I think Essex NYC is my fave of those! Thanks so much ?

It's a shame they don't start till 11am as we really wanted to eat at about 8am to set us up for the whole day, we might do that on Sunday instead though. Looks fab!

I did look at Balthazars in Soho but it looks like they only do the cold breakfasts on a Saturday, not eggs/pancakes etc...?

Not sure about Sarabeth's, which one of the NYC ones would be best do you think?

    Thanks!!

My favourite breakfast (super thick sweet french toast and fruit salad ?) was Pigalle under Hilton Garde Inn Times Square. It was fab and also very relaxed.

The other good choice for American diner style is http://www.juniorscheesecake.com/ I was sensible the first timebut the second time I had cheesecake. ?

Ooooh Pigalle and Blue Fin look good, they're on the short list for Saturday!

Though Good Enough to Eat is also looking good.

Any more for a Saturday morning breakfast?!?!

I've booked Essex on Sunday for Brunch! Thanks Lobster, it looks great! Have you been? Whats the food and atmosphere like?

I second Bubby's and Norma's. The former has a location just over the Brooklyn bridge if you wanted to work up an appetite first, but the Tribeca one is nicer. It has the best bloody marys.

Bathazar does a full offering on both saturday and sunday but I woulnd't say it's particulalrly NYC, it has a very French feel - I've had blood pudding there the last 2 times I've been which definitaly isn't a New York brunch!

I often take vistors to Essex as it's very NYC, as is good enough to eat, you are almost guaranteed to have to "wait on line" for a table and see the world go by. Essex does take reservations though.

NYC doesn't wake up till about 11 at weekends, sunday's in particulalr. You'll be hard pressed to find anything as early as 8.

Ooh, just remembered a fabulous place called Paris Commune on Bank Street (I think) in Greenwich. They do the best eggs benedict and belinis. Great for brunch...and then you can pop around the corner and

get some banana cream from the Magnolia bakery.

Paris Commune, I never even thougth of it as it's so much of a staple. Actually 5 9th 5ninth.com/ is another of my favourite places and has a fab outdoor space, actually on 13th street between 9th and Washington there's several great brunch places with outdoor space and there's a host of places about to open on Washington in connection with the highline project. .

Anyhow, Essex is great, they do 2 drinks included with a brunch entree but I've never known them to really keep a close count. We had 14 people there on Christmas Morning the service was a little slower than usual and they just kept our mimosa glasses topped up and made no attempt to hurry us up or stop pouring after we'd eaten. Needless to say we all kind of swayed out of the place!

    Thanks all ?

I've booked Essex for Sunday at 11am Lobster, so thanks for that, it looks great! We have to leave for the airport at about 3pm so no doubt will be in there or nearby for most of the day!

5Ninth looks great too, I can't get the website to work for Paris Commune though....

We might to Bathazar on Saturday as it's right where we're going to go shopping, and then have our proper NYC breakfast/brunch on Sunday at Essex...

We did Bathazar last time we went to NYC and loved it despite it being more 'french' than 'new york' so maybe that's a good compromise to do that and then Essex on Sunday!

    Thanks again everyone ?
