Oh arses...H has an "at risk of redundancy" letter

alison76, 15 January, 2009 at 13:28 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 24

My H just called. His work have the bosses over from Germany today. They're all being called to individual meetings this afternoon and being told whether they're in a pool of people facing redundancy.

I feel sick. It's the waiting and not knowing that's turning my stomach upside down.

Please can I have some vibes for my H - we're due some luck after my job situation and our holiday!

Oh gosh - did you see that coming? It's a bit harsh to just turn up from Germany and start making people redundant.

I hope your h gets the result you want x

He knew they were coming over and had a vague idea there may be some redundancies but nothing as formal as this.

He says he's fine and calm so at least I don't need to worry about him.

    Thanks.

Well he's just called. He has a letter. They've told him they know his work and it's great but because he's management he has a letter. They have said to him to consider other countries, especially the Benelux ones and specifically Amsterdam.

Basically, the management is going to come from Berlin now and it's all because they replaced the outgoing head of UK office (who switched off before he left) with a useless girl. Everyone complained about her to head office when they were last over.

All of the management team have letters and they're closing down the sales dept completely.

So here we go again - it was me before Xmas and now it's H, although it does sound as if they'd like to keep him if possible. And we've just had a chat and he would agree to be based in Amsterdam Monday - Friday for the time being if it gave him breathing space to find a job.

    Thanks Sophie and everyone else.

The only good thing is that he isn't flipping out - he can sometimes get very stressed and lose the ability to stay calm and focused but he seems ok.

I just wish my stomach would stop churning!

Sorry to hear this. It does sound slightly positive in that it sounds as though they want to keep him.

    Oh no Alison, thats crap.

Maybe you could start a whole new life in Amsterdam if you fancied? If not, he does have a bit of breathing space to look for something else.

Thanks all. Apparently they find out on Monday so the weekend will be fun!

It does seem that he's being "punished" for being management. The other member of his team has been told he's safe and was told about H's situation and that the only reason is because he's management.

The girl who was in charge just was out of her depth and very non-inclusive with the rest of the management team and it appears they're alll being tarred with her brush.

Still....he's positive. He's already contacted 5-6 recruitment agencies and I got a call a few mins ago to say he's been contacted about 2 jobs already so that's good.

But I think I'll be having a somewhat sozzled H tonight - the whole office went out to the pub about 45 mins ago and he's going out for a drink tonight. He's told me not to cancel my dinner plans and to have a good night as he will be. ?

God last night was awful. All his positivity and resolve were gone and he burst in to tears when he came through the door. He's feeling embarrassed and that he's let everyone down, especially me, and is absolutely convinced he's going.

I've told him the upset & anger are stages he has to get through and we'll spend the weekend getting thoughts together and plan his strategy for the consultation meeting on Monday.

I do have some queries though - the consultation period seems very short - told Thursday, decision on Monday. And he's been told his dept is going, yet all the members of his team are safe. The main reason is to save money, yet they've been hiring and all new staff on probation period are safe as well - it's only the 3 people in management positions who are at risk.

And on top of that I think I have appendicitis but can't get an appointment with my doctor. I'm in screaming agony and have been for a few days.

Alison, so sorry to hear you are going through this. Hopefully though the short consultation period will mean you don't have long to worry and can start making plans. You were considering emigrating weren't you, perhaps this is the opportunity you both need?

If you think it's appendicitis, get ye to A&E - if it bursts it can be horrific

The emigrating thing was because of an interview for a role in Abu Dhabi. That didn't progress past 1st interview.

I'm now sorted-ish in a role (thank God) and we just need to get H sorted - part of the plan is to offer to take a pay cut - we can afford a 5K drop happily, possibly more.

You sound really positive about your H's position, I hope he gets some good news soon.

Well it appears he's getting the fire in his belly back.

I've had a couple of calls from him this morning and he's had a couple more jobs run past him. The latest one is for his current company's biggest competitor. He'd probably interview next week and says he could take all his clients with him - just to screw them over.

He's going to need this sort of attitude to keep him going so I'm pleased he's getting his head together.

And I can't get an appointment with my doctor so am going to the local walk in clinic at lunchtime as this pain is not subsiding at all.

Alison - Are you thinking of going to the walk in on Marsh Wall?

I would go to the Royal London, being a women it could be gynae related - so at least there it's all under one roof.

    Hope your OK?

Yeah - Marsh Wall. My appendix has "grumbled" in the past and I don't want to turn up to A&E and be wasting their time. I should have had it out about 10 yrs ago - but Mum took the call saying there was a bed for me and thought my pain had stopped and cancelled it!

I'm ok - just in quite a bit of pain. Am going out shortly.
