Oh bugger, my table plan is rubbish! (photo)

Hugo Brambles, 1 January, 2010 at 13:04 Posted on Planning 0 23

Just done my table plan and it's crap! It looks so boring and plain. I've put a ribbon/diamonte buckle on (as the invitations had) to see how that would but it doesn't really help. I'm not into butterflys ribbons, hearts, roses and kittens so any suggestions as to what I can do to make it look a bit more exciting as I'm tempted to bin the blinking thing? As I say the ribbon isn't attached, I just placed it on to see how it would look. The names are attached so there is no changing them.

Im generally rubbish at stuff like this but could you put a darker coloured border round each of the rectangles if you still want to keep it quite simple?

Im sure someone else can give you much better advice tho!

I was gonna suggest doing the names in colour to add something but if they're un-changeable...

What's your colour scheme? How about adding thin ribbon round the boxes to make a border?

Other than that, i'm not really too sure what to suggest. I quite like the plainer look (I'm too not fussed on butterflies and the likes)

I like it! I love the classic plain look. I think the guests will be able to read it easily too which is what you want.

Yes I wanted to do that (well put black frames round the inside of the holes) but the mount was made by a photo framers and although you can't see it, the holes have been specially angle cut if that makes sense (like you see on pictures that are framed). As I say the names are stuck on already so I can't mess with that. If I were to stick dark boarders on it would have the potential to look even crapper as I don't think I could be that exact if you know what I mean?

Instead of using ribbon to frame the boxes what about cutting out squares to place over the name squares in another colour? I wouldnt have a very thick frame as you dont want it to dominate it.

Having said that though, I think your table plan is fine.

As I say I don't think I could be that exact, it'd require extremely precise handiwork and I think I'd end up making it look worse!

It is functional but I've spent ages on it and quite a bit of money too buying the frame, the card, the special paper, having a picture framer cut the mount out, messing out getting the right sized font etc etc and people won't even give it a second glance (well they will look but only because its a table planner iyswim), I wanted it to look nice as well as being the table planner. [stamps feet] lol!

I think I'd make the ribbon very slightly wider if you have bigger buckles and also perhaps add another ribbon and buckle either at the top of the frame or underneath the top table (so that there is ribbon above and below it). Could you use a different colour ribbon so there is more of a contrast?

Thanks, I have only that ribbon and those buckles though.

In my mind I see swirls somehow in black stuck on somewhere. But I don't know how or where I'd do it.

I think it is very nice. I think you should give yourself a pat on the back. Hope my looks like this when I get round to doing it.

Do you know any arty people (even on here) who could draw on top of your mount?? Like the swirls you imagine............?

I can see a swirly leafy thing - like Hitched's one - around the edges. All you need is someone to do it for you......

i like your plan Smiley smile

    Hmm.... ok.

have you got any grease proof paper or tissue paper???

You could download swirls and print them off into paper, trace the design, lay it on to your mount (practice on the underside first!) then trace the design on. Fill in with decent black marker pen.

I think it is classical and fine, but a quick trip to the ribbon shop for contrasting colour may set your mind at rest.

I dont think it looks that bad TBH. Maybe needs a little something to finish it but not much. The suggestions above are all good ones - good luck!!!!!

I would ditch the ribbon and buckle and just leave it as it is, otherwise you could spoil it. I would have lined inside the boxes with a thick black pen but if you mess it up it will be ruined.

I looks nice just plain but if you can't change the ribbon or the rectangles with the names and only have a few days I think you should just be pleased with it.

Most of my suggestions aren't possible because you can't change the names but how about getting stick on gems and adding them at the corners of each rectangle and inbetween the top table between and first row of 3 tables. Would add a bit of sparkle and glam to it.

Maybe you could add some bows to the corner of the boxes like the bottom one here http://www.idoweddinginvitations.co.uk/table_plans.htm

I think it is nice, plain and simpe. The ribbon and buckle are too small though, so I would remove them

    What is your colour scheme?

Thanks all, will ditch the buckle and ribbon.

We don't have an exact colour scheme, the invites were black and white with the white ribbon/diamonte buckle, the tables are white with black centre pieces, my flowers are white, the only dash of colour is OH's tie which is cadbury purple.

Do you have any black ribbon that you could put down each side of the table plan? Or some little black bows you could put on the corners?

How about adding some tiny diamantes to the corner of each Table just to give a sparkle.

You could just get a fcoloured felt pen and with a ruler draw a thin line round the inside border of each box. Shouldn't be too hard and will make it stand out a little bit more. Maybe purple if thats what you siad OH had on or black to tie in with your centre pieces.

To be honest it does look fine as it is and people are just going to look at it to find where they sit and thats about it really.

I like it! I also like the ribbon and buckle, I think the whole thing is quite classic looking and the ribbon is a nice touch.

I don't know if your planning on doing it now, but I think something in each of the corners would be really nice, like a sort of corner mount (the swirls you were talking about).

I don't think it's needed though and tbh, people will see it for less than a minute, it looks nice and does it's purpose!x
