Oh dear, I think I've turned into a food snob!

Mrs Magic, 22 November, 2008 at 13:13 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 13

A friend of mine has just bought her own flat. I'm going tonight for dinner, along with my mum and her folks. I offered to take the food but she said it was fine, she would cook and I can take pudding (I'm doing lemon cheesecake)

She's just sent a text saying we are having curry flavour 'Chicken Tonight'. ? I hate curry and I've not eaten Chicken Tonight for years. I'm dreading it but I'll suck it up and say it was lovely. She's too excited to burst her bubble and say I don't like curry!

My tastes have changed so much over the years that I wouldn't dream of buying a jar of Chicken Tonight as I know it's so much nicer and probably cheaper to make your own. I think I've morphed into a food snob.

Oh dear. ?

I'm not a food snob at all.I'd happily eat Chicken Tonight.

In fact, perhaps I'm the real "foodie" because I'll hoover anything if it's given to me?

I feel your pain. PILs used to make everything from packets and jars, but things are slowly improving.

I make almost everything from scratch, and when they come over for dinner MIL sits in the kitchen watching me, saying "you make it look so easy". I tell her that most of it IS easy, and now they've started taking some of my recipes home with them. Hurrah!

I remember the good ol' days when I was at school. Chicken Tonight was seen as a luxury ?

Curry flavour Chicken Tonight ? I always make my own sauces and stuff as well but I'd eat it if someone else was cooking, but I wouldn't serve it myself! However if it was reduced to 10p a jar I might be tempted ?

If you don't like curry then tell her! If I were her I'd rather know that people were really enjoying what I'd made than just eating it to be polite ?

She's already bought it though and I'd hate to me a meany. It's her first proper meal in her new house and she's excited, bless her.

Apparently it's mild and creamy so I'm guessing korma. I'll just have a little (yay at not having much appetite) with extra rice. I've been able to eat korma before when I've had to so I'm sure I'll live.

BTW, the snob thing was more about the chicken tonight than the curry. ?

LittleStar, my MiL is the same! She does try more now bless her, or just get me to cook!

Just adding that i think she would be more pleased that you didn't like any curry, than to see you pick at her cooking. Just ask her to make you a bit of chicken on it's own and you will eat it with the rice and bread. Maybe a bit dull but better than the alternative ?

Oh, no, MIL doesn't cook! She watches me, then when we eat and FIL says "this is lovely" she says "LS says it's quite easy - you could get the recipe and we could have it next week". And he does, bless him ?

Maybe chicken on it's own would work, it's too late to ask her to change what she is cooking! ? I wouldn't pick on my plate, just take a smaller amount in the first place. It's normally the first thing I say to people but to be honest, I thought she already knew! I'm guessing being a CT it won't be strong smelling as I think that's one of the things I hate about it, I have to sit upstairs if Mr M gets a take away.

I like her style LS. ?

I think I had curry flavour CT about 10 years ago when I didn't (then) like curry. I think it was VERY mild, more creamy sauce than proper curry kick.

I must be on the reciprocal heading....

Have always done my currys completely from scratch, but lately have taken a notion for using Patak's pastes in place of my own 'base'.

    Works well I find.

Wouldn't use them on their own, nor Chicken Tonight. But if presented with said at a freind's I'd eat with good grace.

(I used to have a friend who was universally known as "Ms. ******* Ragu" due to her fondness for inviting people round for 'an Italian' and presenting spag & the jar of the day)

I don't use very many ready-made sauces, but I do tend to buy curry ones as whenever I've made my own it never seems to have as much flavour. I often buy the Pataks ones in Home Bargainswhen on offer, the Jalfrezi is actually v tasty! Not too sure about chicken tonight though, never tend to buy them.

Oh dear, I've never tried CT, but can't imagine why anyone would serve it up for guests. Hope it's not too strong for you.

My MIL regularly makes carbonara from a jar...I have no idea why when it's so much nicer to make your own.

Oh bless it's sweet of her to invite you round and I'm guessing she's quite young and/or has limited cooking skills. No I wouldn't cook with Chicken Tonight but I do use Sharwoods curry sauces as I used to work for them and they're made fairly authentically albeit in Manchester! However I always serve home cooked food to guests.

I think it will be a very mild generically flavoured "english" curry sauce so am sure you'll be fine. Perhaps ask for not much sauce on your portion before she serves it?
