oh dear.....parents didn't like the venue

lauralil, 3 March, 2009 at 06:42 Posted on Planning 0 13

We took h2b's parents to see a couple of venues on sunday. The first one in Warwick was great, just what we were looking for and within our budget. Then we met them for lunch and took them with us to see another venue in Stratford, which as AWFUL!

I was like no no no no no no no within the first 30 seconds. I hate it when venues have great photography on their website, but in reality the place wasn't up to scratch. I guess I SHOULD have clicked when they said that they didn't have any photos of previous weddings and the man who showed us round was more like a handyman than a wedding co-ordinator! hahaha

oh well, we didn't like it so took h2b's parents back to the one we saw earlier in the day without them, in Warwick. They were saying that it was nice, that the lack of parking may have been an issue but as it was in the centre there would be more car parks. We left thinking we'd actually found our venue, somewhere modern and quite contemporary and at a good price too.

BUT last night h2b's dad texted me (which he has never done before) saying that we shouldn't rush and have a good look around. If we're worried about budget they will help as they they think we should have a bigger, better venue with nice grounds for photos. He also called me and apologised for sticking his nose in, but I know he just wanted us to have a great day.

To be honest i was a bit taken aback. h2b and I had budgeted for a nice town boutique style hotel, yes it had no grounds but it was a nice place within our budget. We hadn't looked at character buildings and stately homes etc because they were so out of price range so we had this picture in our heads of what we could afford. We never expected his parents (or anyone) to help pay for our wedding, but I am so grateful that they are.

On sunday we're going to view my dream venue, I'm so excited I've got butterflies already. I never thought getting married somewhere like that would be possible, but now it is and I'm really happy that we did take his parents with us otherwise we would have gone and booked it, not knowing that the money was there if we needed it.

I've just read your post and its made me all ?

Oooh you sound like you've got great pil2b. ]To text and then phone to apologise - think you are right that they just want you to have a great day. They probably picked up that you didn't expect any help. With lovely people like that around you, you are guaranteed to have a lovely day too.

Where's your dream venue? Best of luck for Sunday.

    Thank you ?

hehe I know I am all ? too! I was like that last night looking through the photos we found of the venue.

h2b is a GREAT man, he treats me like a princess and works very hard. We don't have much money, but for us that has never been an issue because we have each other. I think his parents see what I see in him, and they think he deserves the best wedding day ever.

That is a really lovely thing for your in laws to do.

Without wanting to sound too negative can I just give a little bit of advice from personal experience. When you accept money sometimes wedding planning can get very stressful as you need to please other people so just make sure if they are giving you money what they may expect to do done with it i.e. will they want to have a different menu that you etc.

Like I've said it's from personal experience I'm saying this and also because I've heard it so many times on Hitched so just think carefully and discuss things with everyone before making any bookings.

I hope you get to have your dream wedding in your dream venue.

    Hey purrfectgems,

I have heard some stories about people going through similar experiences.

When I spoke to my FIL2B last night, he said that he didn't want to put his nose in, he just wanted us to have better options so he said he'd give us a cheque and then we can do whatever we want to do. He kept reiterating that he didn't want us to change our mind if we were happy with the venue, just that not to choose it if it was only because of the budget. Which when h2b and I talked about it, we were basing our decisions on money as the first thing we looked at in a venue was a price list!

Bless him, it was so sweet how he worded everything last night ?

Coombe abbey is heaven- my friend got married there a couple of summers back- one thing i would say is be careful about how many other weddings are going on as my friend had the building that is just to the side of the conservatory on its own (self contained) which was lovely but if you went outside to get a bit of fresh air you were right next to another wedding and you could hear every word of their speeches/music, etc- too close for me esp as it is expensive. But the grounds are heaven and she has some gorgeous photos.

Aww that's so sweet. I thought it was going to be a ggrrrrrrrr post.. not a ? one! Smiley laugh Sounds perfect. We also we're planning to pay for everything ourselves, but now we've been given several cheques and a few promises (pick your dress and i'll pay, don't look at the price as long as it's the one!! Smiley laugh) so we're also very lucky!

Oh thats lovely. We planned to pay for the wedding ourselves too but then both sets of parents also wanted to contribute, we have said that they are paying for specific things (band, video, evening bar etc) rather than giving us a cheque.

Sounds like your PIL2b are really excited about the wedding. Have fun looking this weekend!

How lovely of your PIL Laura. Lucky girl!

Just remember though.....even though you may hav some extra funds to play with, you don't have to change your mind on the venue if the one you've seen already is the right one for you. Nice to keep options open though. It has to be yours and M's decision remember.

    All very exciting!!!

    xx

Hey Maz, yeah I know!!!! v lucky indeed!!!

I think its partly because they paid for his bro's uni education where as M is doing his apprenticeship and with me being at uni as well, we're both SKINT AS! Well...hopefully not for much longer as I've started freelancing and I'm super busy.

Every time I finish a job I'm like that will pay for a guests drink package or their meal haha keeps me motivated!

We definitely want to change our mind now that the funds are available, this is my dream wedding. When M heard that his dad had texted me he was like "tell him we want coombe! hahaha"

    xxx

i definitely do rach ? I had the worst year ever last year and things have finally turned around with a lot of hard work. Just the fact I'm marrying my prince is amazing enough, let alone the fact that we can look at some amazing venues ?
