Oh God... MIL whinge!

Fionka261, 1 August, 2008 at 22:19 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 3

My MIL seems to have reverted back to thinking H and his brother are children again despite being 30 and 37. For example last weekend we were chatting about the weekend break we have booked for the PIL for their 60th birthdays, BIL joked that the kids would have to go without food so he could pay his half. MIL is now insisting that she pays his half. She also sends H care packages and he regularly gets a carrier bag full of at least 10 packets of biscuits and we get given loads of crap that we don't want.

So we are going camping next week and husband phones her to see if they had any of their old camping equipment we could borrow, they have long since given it away. I am now dreading this weekend.... I can see her having a guilt trip that she wasn't able to lend us anything and going out and buying us loads of crap!!

I know she means well and her heart is in the right place (and others have MILs that are far worse) but I wish she would stop treating us like children and filling our house with crap!

My MIL is the same, she asked us the other day whether we were ok going food shopping on our own (Im 26, H is 28 and we have been living together for 6 years, so if we cant manage now we never will)

Has your MIL always been like it?

I know how you feel from the food point of view. Before MIL moved away she used to come around on H's days off (I was always at work thankfully!) and bring lots of cakes and biscuits, and she always got me a slice of carrot cake from Hampsons. Bless her she was trying to be nice but we were (and still are) trying to be on a health kick.

Yup... I met H when we were 25 and he was still living at home. It used to really freak me out if I stayed over as I'd get up to have a shower and when I'd come back the bed would have been made and all our clothes folded. I know she means well and she loves looking after her children and grandchildren but I find it really intrusive.

I enjoy saving my money and dreaming about things I would like to buy rather than having a whole load of tat bought for me. I also make lots of lovely cakes and meals and H does not need care packages.

We are trying to be healthy too and doing pretty well at it. FIL is morbidly obese and quite poorly at the moment but they can't seem to link this with eating crap.
