Oh help please! Struggling to find bridesmaids dresses

justwantlife2beasy, 19 April, 2012 at 12:27 Posted on Planning 0 9

I'm due to get married in about a years time. My dress is already sorted, as are the blokes. The issue I'm having are the bridesmaids.

As we both have children from previous relationships, we decided that we only wanted them to be our attendants. All ok so far... except I'm having a huge problem trying to find something suitable for them all. They are a boy, aged 14 (not an issue, he's wearing the same as my H2B), and three girls aged 13, 10 and 10. Two of them are tall for their ages and super skinny (the 13 yo is already 5'5 and a size 4-6, one 10yo is a little under 5' and clothes for her age are far too big for her- I have to take them in at the waist in order to get something that's actually long enough for her). However the other 10yo is average height, but morbidly obese. Obviously, I love her dearly and in no way, shape or form do I want to exclude her or make her feel bad. Since being with us, she has been slowly but steadily losing weight from being part of our lifestyle, ie eating healthily and doing lots of activity. I will not, under any circumstances, put her on a crash diet, as has been suggested by some of my less understanding so called 'friends'- I do not want to risk the poor pet developing an eating disorder, especially as she already has a few hang ups about her size.

So, my dilemma. Where on earth can I find a) suitably modest, age appropriate dresses, and b) dresses that actually fit and are flattering for all my girls? Did I mention also that they have set their hearts on wearing exactly the same dress? Arrrghhhhh! Help!

Hiya, i'm not an expert on kids clothing shops so i'm not sure at all about any high street stores for little girls that range greatly in size but i'm sure a 'proper' bridesmaid range could cater for all shapes and sizes like they do with adults? have you looked anywhere yet? where abouts in the country are you maybe someone will be along with a suggestion soon, you'll get sorted Smiley smile x

I would recommend finding a local seamstress and getting them made - that's what I'm doing (mainly because I couldn't find the right colour) I've spent about £80 on beautiful silk for three dresses and the seamstress will charge between £70 and £80 per dress.

That way they all get to wear the same and all get the same special feeling rather than going to a mainstream shop and trying on dresses that don't fit which might make her feel uncomfortable and even more self concious about her weight.

In all honesty I would wait until the beginning of next year if you have that long. You just dont know how tall/fat/thin they will all be until then. You may buy them now thinking they'll fit next year but they dont. I made this mistake with my nieces flower girl dress, bought 2-3 in January sales and it fits her now, so isnt going to in September. I'd wait.

You're right about the normal childrens high street shops- none of them have dresses that will fit my blended 10yo. TBH, not many of them fit my bio's either... bio2 (lordy it's hard describing them and maintaining anonymity!) maybe, but from what I've seen, she'll almost certainly be too skinny for a dress that's long enough for her- she's taller than me!

Similar story from 'proper' bridesmaid shops. None of the ones for children I've seen so far are big enough for my blended. They all recommend that I get an adult one for her and bio1, which I don't want to do because they'll need massive adjustment for length/width and also because they seem a bit too grown up, and dare I say it, a bit too sexy for children. Very nice for an adult woman, but not necessarily appropriate for a self conscious teenager and overweight child! Not to mention that then bio2's dress won't match...

I'm based in the north west, btw, but I don't object to driving for a few hours is anyone knows of a shop selling plus size bridesmaids dresses. Unfortunately, I fear I may be hoping for too much..

I would say definitely wait a bit, as you don't know how their shapes will change.

get them made. lightinthebox has been recommended for that, and there is someone on ebay who has a shop in birmingham but will take measurements and make dress, comes highly recommended.

find a local seamstress, get them all involved in the discussion of the sort of dress they want and go down that road, otherwise you risk the body issues she might get from not fitting into kids sizes. at least this way, they all look great rather than some being ill fitted.

Oops, it took me so long to write that I can't keep up!

@mrsjaytobe, waiting to buy until closer to the time is exactly what we intend to do- as you say, the little darling's will almost certainly grow/change shape/decide they hate the dresses if we buy them now! I guess we are aware that getting dresses to fit all of them is going to be a challenge, and so figured that it was a good idea to start looking around sooner rather than later. Even though my blended IS losing weight, she'll be unlikely to have become small enough to fit into a 'normal' dress by then. She's currently having to wear womens size 18 t shirts etc, with me taking the hems up. School uniform is a nightmare... ☹️ Still, she's getting there.

I think you might be onto something by getting them made by a seamstress. Anyone know any good ones in my area?

Ah, cross posted again. I think you are all right, and look into getting them made just for them. I really, really don't want getting their dresses to turn into a nightmare for them- blended girl and bio2 hate shopping as it is! Thanks for the links, I'll look into them.

I'm expecting similar issues with my BM's dresses as I will have an adult as well as both my girls (who will be 14 and 8) from a previous relationship to find dresses for, I'm hoping the adult and the 14 yo wont be too difficult as the 14yo will get an adult size dress but matching the 8yo in might cause a problem, I'm considering 3 different colours or using a dress maker for all 3. Either way I'll not be looking at it until Dec 12/Jan 13 ( wedding June 13), as I'm aware how quickly and suddenly my girls grow and change shape.

Hope you find what you are looking for.

    Good Luck.
