Old Marrieds!!! Let's impart some hard earned wisdom! :-)

bringon2010, 28 July, 2010 at 14:49 Posted on Planning 0 11

Hello All!

Well, been I've lurking on here since I got married over 2 months ago and am still loving the reports and flashes ladies (as always) :-) and missing the buzz of looking forward to geting married (it's a crazy but SUCH an exciting time) and I suppose now the dust has settled I was wondering... do any other old marrieds have any advice they wish they had been given before the big day?

For me:

Don't be afraid to haggle a price for EVERYTHING... I was just so delighted to get my venue on the day I wanted I didn't even question the price. Turns out Shona the venue manager had JUST increased the prices the week before I booked and would have been willing to negotiate as she thought she had possibly priced herself out of the market (*slaps hand to forehead*)

Consequently, I haggled over the price of my wedding dress and got a £150 designer veil thrown in for free.

While my florist had told me the flowers on the "signing the register" table would be moved to the top table for dinner (doubling up on the flowers) the florist left before the ceremony and the venue didn't know about it. I has "assumed" they would just be moved there - they weren't. They were moved to another room and our top table looks a little bare in photos now. MOTO: NEVER assume one supplier will talk to another. Keep a running order and make sure everyone has the same copy about a week beforehand.

Try and have a receiveing line for your evening guests... we hadn't planned on one but are so glad we did on the day as we got to say hello to everyone (albeit briefly) and as the evening (due to a few beverages and dancing) goes so fast so it's important to make everyone feel acknowledged...

That's mine... any other OM's want to share?

BringBack2010! ;-) x

Very helpful Bringon, thank you. I don't like the thought of haggling but put it that way and I could get some freebees thrown in along the line. I will bear all those tips in mind x

I was reading this as plan - tables and thinking what the hell is that, am i missing something?? ? Im so silly!!

This is a great thread. Can i be cheeky and ask how much you 'OM's' Smiley tongue paid for alterations? or any other b2b's, i think my shop are going to try and charge me a lot although my dress fit perfectly, its just the length!

This was a concern of mine as I am short with a what I though was a bigger chest for my tiny height so I thought I was going to need some serious alterations.

I am getting charged a flat rate of £70 for the whole lot. But other shops I visited charge by alteration and about £50 each alteration. So they would charge £50 for taking some off the length and then £50 for taking in the size etc.

If you dye shoes then dont let them get wet, dye will run. If you waterproof them then you cant dye them afterwards. My bm's shoes were 'leaking' blue dye v close to my train, during the photos.

cant think of anything else to share, sorry!

My top tip is plan, plan, plan! Our venue made us do a detailed time plan of everything before the day, so we and all the staff knew what was going on - a bit boring perhaps, but the whole day ran really smoothly as a result.

Take a minute on your day to take it all in. The day goes so quickly. I remember the moment I did that. I was sat at the top table just looking at everyone enjoying themselves. Good times!

    OH! Another thing!

I remember an old married hitcher once starting a thread like this (sorry OM can't remember who you were), but they had mentioned one of thier regets was not moving thier engagement ring back onto thier wedding ring hand after the ceremony as it showed up on the photos and she had wanted them photographed together....

I remeber signing the register and that thought RANDOMLY came into my head - cue quick ring change over!!!(thanks OM - whoever you are!!!) :-)

My mum's friend is a seamstress and did all my alterations (adding bustle hooks, lifting the hem and shortening the straps) all for £50 - which we thought was an absolute BARGAIN - guess we were lucky though!!!! :-) x

Sorry - they just keep popping into my head...

My CBM didn't get a chance to practice hooking my bustle up until the morning of he wedding, come dancing time and we had had a few bevvies we went back up to the room to "hook me up" and because she had only practiced once in the morning (and in a bit of a rush), what should have taken 2 mnutes, ended up taking 20...

    20 minutes lost!!!!

    practice practice practice... :-) xxxx

    Haggle ... haggle .. haggle !!!

My alterations for my dress totalled 120.00 inc steam clean & press

My bm's (from a diff shop) for 3 = nearly 500.00 - allegedly pressed & my alterations were not finished .. they took in part which meant one dress stuck out to side more than other, I tried to complain & get it sorted & they started totalling costs. Luckily my bm was there and stopped em doing it as they said they would have to re-steam and it would cost 200.00 - I will never recommend this shop to any of my friends but where I got my wedding dress was amazing. - They were not ready until the Thurs before the Sat wedding also so I was stuck!

Try and enjoy all the planning & dont sweat the small stuff. I didnt worry about my "greens" matching, in fact if they were slightly different it complemented the other.

If people offer to help - let them .. I went and put place cards at the venue on the morning of my wedding as they were finished on the Friday - I really could of done with an extra hour in bed!

Enjoy & Smile! For me it truly was the best day ever, I remember a while ago on here there was a thread and the wisdom was to take 5 mins with your husband and taking in your surroundings .. I did this and it was great to see everyone enjoying themselves.
