Old, new, borrowed, BLAH!

Skeptical78, 6 August, 2013 at 11:23 Posted on Planning 0 34

Is anyone actually doing the old traditional something old / new / borrowed / blue thing?

To be honest, I'd not given it a second though and part of me can't be a*sed to sort it out now. I'm not particularly superstitious either.

Anyone else not bothering?

    Ewwww... (from Wikipedia)

"The something old" and " something blue" are devices to baffle the [2]

I'm not wearing my mum's old keks on my wedding day! ?

I did it but only for tradition not as a superstitious thing!

    Old - Veil

    New - Dress

    Borrowed - Sister's silver chain

Blue - blue brooch bouquet with a silver heart charm on it that said 'Something Blue'

I just did it for fun really!

I did, but kinda by accident - I didn't 'plan' to do it, it just happened!

    Borrowed - grandma's necklace

Blue - engagement ring, flowers, bridesmaid, garter

Old - engagement ring, grandma's necklace, lace on flowers from mums dress

new - shoes, dress, tiara etc etc..

I think its a bit of fun, especially if someone else organises it for you. I did my sister a little goodie bag that I gave to her the night before the wedding before we went to bed. Otherwise she wouldn't have bothered.

    I'm doing it.

Don't have everything decided yet though

Old - all being well the vintage wax flower tiara my grandma wore on her wedding day, needs a little TLC.

    New - my dress

    Blue - The garter

    Borrowed - undecided.

I wasn't bothered but my Mum wanted me to do it. She gave me a pendant from one of my late Nanny's necklaces - old/blue/borrowed, all in one go. I stitched in onto the handle of my brooch bouquet. I didn't designate anything specifically as "new".

I'm doing it, but not because I am superstitious.

Old - bolero (I bought it from preloved, so I consider it old!)

    New - Dress

Borrowed - earrings (they belong to my BM)

    Blue - Shoes

Nope, I wont be going with it. I'm a bit conscious of my wedding feeling like work and therefore seem to have this psychological barrier against most traditional things for our own day. I also reckon my massive peacock tattoo is already enough to render me barren based on that wiki stuff ?. Evil eyes galore! There's no fooling all them.

Yes I am borrowing my mother in laws garter, which is Old, Borrowed and Blue. She got married 27 years ago in the same church we are getting wed. They are still so happy and a great couple (plus the husband is under the thumb haha) so I am hoping we have that in 27 years too Smiley smile xxxx

I did it for fun / tradition / an excuse to spend a fortune on a Tanzanite pendant!!

Old: my late grandmother's eternity ring

    New: dress

Borrowed : lace handkerchief that belonged to OH's late grandmother, borrowed from MIL

Blue: the aforementioned diamond and Tanzanite pendant, worn on an ankle chain since I already had a necklace as a wedding gift from OH

    New - Dress

Borrowed - My best friends veil

    Blue - Knickers

I will do it, but I draw the line at wearing someone elses pants! I think I will ask my two girls to help me out with it, with maybe a bit of guidance otherwise my something blue is likely to be a smurf!

There seems to be a theme emerging that most people do this with some sort of heirloom / in memory of someone who's passed away, which is really cool.

I don't have anyone like that or any heirlooms, so I feel vindicated about my decision. There aren't many other traditional elements to our day anyway (not having first dance, etc.) so it might seem a bit odd to adhere to some traditions and not others!

Borrowed: a button from my godsons last school shirt and a button from my boyfriends army uniform

blue: one blue button from my nana and one from my grandma

I'm doing it for the traditional side of things! Was hoping to borrow/have my mum's veil, but didn't suit my dress unfortunately! Instead I'm having:

Old and borrowed - pair of my mum's earrings

    New - dress

Blue - will most likely find a garter with some blue on it!

Don't forget the final line 'and a sixpence in your shoe' !

    I am having:

Old: A ring of my great grandmothers

    New: Bracelet from OH

Borrowed: Ring from great grandmother (covering 2 bases Smiley winking )

Blue: A small blue ribbon which OH's mum gave me that she had on her dress, that has been passed down the family

Sixpence - also from OH's mum, which is sewn into some fabric and has been passed down.

Does it have to be something you wear? I thought I'd covered all bases, but was counting the new H as my something old!

That's what I what I thought. For something old, I got my sister a book that was our favourite when we were younger (sadly it wasn't the original one as that got lost when we moved once but it was the thought!)

My bridesmaids will be my something blue!

I havent really thought about it either. However me and OH already have 2 kids so I guess according to wikipedia, I'll be ok wearing my own knickers on my wedding day LOL!!

My engagement ring is sapphire & diamonds so I guess that could be my something blue, can you class your dress as something new? If so, thats that sorted. As for borrowed and old - not a scoobie!!!

Definitely not wearing anyone else's knickers no matter how fertile it will supposedly make me!

Old - Hopefully borrowing a brooch from my Nan to pin onto my bouquet.

New - Dress, shoes & side tiara

Borrowed - SIL's veil and Mums necklace

Blue - Having our wedding date sewn onto the lining of my dress

Another one doing it for fun! My 'borrowed' will probably be my shoes - I wore sparkly silver shoes as a maid of honour earlier this year, and my colour scheme is blue and silver, so if I wear them they'll be 'borrowed' from my bridesmaid outfit! Two of my bridesmaids will be in duck egg blue so that’s sorted. Just to need to find ‘old’ and ‘new!

I don't really fancy borrowing someone else's undergarments, so instead mine will be:

    Old: My nan's necklace

    Borrowed: Sister's tiara

    New: Dress/veil

    Blue: ribbon on my bouquet

However, I haven't done this out of superstition it's just a coincidence (my colour scheme is blue so BM's will also be in blue).

? This made me laugh, I would never have known that! Can't fully trust wikipedia though.

I am doing it but it just sort of happened (not the mums undies bit though!)

I'm not the least bit superstitious or traditional so I won't do it unless some relative or another presses me on it/ passes on something which they want me to wear/use.

I'm doing it, didn't set out to, but would have looked specifically for things if they hadn't fallen into place.

Old: earrings and necklace set OH bought me our first Christmas (10 years old)

New: dress, shoes, undies, veil, hair piece

Borrowed: SiL's bracelet I've always had a hankering for, last time she wore it she asked if it would go with her bridesmaid dress, I said yes, but it will go better with mine, and she graciously agreed I could borrow it Smiley smile

Blue: bridesmaids, blue thistles & ribbon in my bouquet

Sixpence: my mum has the one her nan gave her, I'll be the 4th generation to use it Smiley smile

I might do it for fun but if I can't find anything to fit I won't stress about it. I'm not really fussed on doing things just because it's 'tradition' so we'll see. ?

I was very touched at the weekend when my mother in law to be asked if I was doing the whole, old, new, borrowed, blue thing. I told her I hadnt thought about it. she said she had something that could be my "borrowed" and produced a necklace and bracelet. They were beautiful but then she realised they werent white gold and therefore wouldnt match my ring. I dont think I have worn gold in a long time.

I felt so bad as I wanted to be polite but I had to agree with her that as it wasnt white gold I couldnt wear it. ?
