Older Bride

Dakota, 26 April, 2011 at 17:40 Posted on Planning 0 12

Hi,

My longtime partner and I are in our mid 40s and we just got engaged. It's the first time for both of us. We don't have children. I'm writing because although I'm looking forward to marrying my guy I am not interested in spending thousands of pounds, having an embarrassing hen do, wearing a princess-y dress, etc. I just want something cool and casual in London; a nice time for everyone but not over the top. In short, I guess I have a lot in common with every other bride: I'm looking for perfection as I want this event to feel like it fits us and our lifestyle. Are there any websites out there that cater to people like us?

Cheers,

Dakota

I am in my forties and I don't want the big frock and hen do either ! But a wedding still goes through certain processes so I come on here and read the advice that applies to me. Hope you get what you are looking for.

Hello and welcome to Hitched, ,

I'll be 45 on the day I get married. The best bit of advice that I can give you is to do and have what you both want. It's your day.

Everyone on here is more than helpful, , , good luck with your planning

    xx

I'm a older bride, will be 48 by time we get married next year, i'm very excited and can't wait to marry the OH. We don't want a full princess wedding, both been there before, we just want to be able to celebrate with all our family and friends and have a great day our way, and without all the stress and pressure. And definatly no embrassing hen -do.?

I'm very much in the "older" club. I am 53 and my OH is 45 and I know what you mean about it being much more difficult to arrange something that isn't geared to twenty-somethings.

We're having a trad church wedding but the reception is a buffet at the local pub with a bit of dancing (and allegedly bouncy castles for our inner child).

I found getting a dress one of the most difficult things. I want to feel bridal, but not ridiculous, and that isn't easy!

Same here, 39 and 38 when it comes to our big day.

So much wedding stuff seems to be centred around the "princess fairytale wedding" which may be a dream for those in their 20's (whose life experience hasn't taught them any better yet) but certainly from our point of view almost reading it the second time around, a lot of what many Hitchers want at their day makes us cringe - and, I'm sure the lack of them would make many of them cringe if they came to ours.

It doesn't matter though. There is nothing, apart from the legal requirements of marriage, that you *have* to have, and if you want cupcakes instead of a traditional three teir fruit cake, or a barn dance instead of a disco (like we are) then why not? It's your day, so make it special and about what the two of you want rather than what others seem to think you should be having.

I envy you in many ways! I love the idea of a quiet, sophisticated wedding. I've seen several brides at our local registry office in linen suits, couture dresses, even one in a little black dress, so no need for a princess gown if it's not for you. There are literally hundreds of venues that will cater for a small wedding in London, hotels, conference centres, restaurants etc. Talk to the registrars and get a list of licensed premises.

My friend got married last year at a hotel with 30 friends and family, she wore a champagne fitted dress. No fuss, just legal stuff followed by dinner and drinks, and she thoroughly enjoyed it.
