OM advice needed about changing name on drivers licence and passport

moonpie1985, 30 July, 2012 at 14:24 Posted on Planning 0 8

So i have changed most of the things i need to, but now need to do the drivers licence and passport.

I have the forms, but it doesnt say if I need to send an original of the marraige certificate or if i can just send a copy.

Does anyone know, and if so do they send them back?

I only have the one, so if this is the case, I will either need to request more, or wait for one to send the original back before sending off the next form.

    They need the original.

You can request another but you will have to pay. My drivers licence was pretty quick.

I still haven't changed my passport, it was only 2 years old so it can wait before I pay £80 odd quid for another one!!

As roseability says. I included a stamped, self-addressed envelope and they sent the marriage cert back quite quickly. Extra copies cost about £6(? I think!) so it was cheaper to buy the envelope and signed-for stamps than it was to get an extra copy of the cert.

I think they're cheaper from the registry office. On the day copies were £3 so we got four!

We have ordered 2 on the day. I have just got the forms ready for mine as I will need to change passport as soon as we're back off HM as we go away at Christmas. They def want original for that, my plan is to get that done as priority then with the other original sort out bank and other stuff in person, then when I have my second original back can send one off to sort out driving license and other bits that need to be done via post.

The post office might be able to help you. I know they chack passport applications and take photos for driving licences so maybe they have a service where they take a photocopy of the original and stamp or sign the copy to say its come from an original or something?

I sent my passport off a couple of weeks ago and I had to include an original marriage certificate. They will send the certificate back by normal post but you can tick a box to get it returned by special delivery - I think it cost an extra £2. I ticked this option because just a few days earlier, I had thrown away one of our certificates, thinking it was meant for the recycling, oops!!! Our marriage certificates on the day cost £3.50 but extras from Cambridge registry cost £10, plus postage or you can avoid this by including your own SAE.

There is a booklet in the brown envelope with the D1 form which explains what you need to send. Fill in section 2 and section 5 for change of name. I have just sent mine today and enclosed a Recorded SAE so my certificate gets back safely. I am travelling soon on my passport so am not changing that just yet but imagine they will want the original.
