OM's - Did your husbands see your wedding dress before you walked down the aisle?

laineywhu, 23 September, 2010 at 11:15 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 25

Hey everyone,

I was on facebook this morning and an old school friend was speaking to me about her wedding, she is getting married in a few months and was talking to me about our dresses etc. When she asked me if my husband was shocked about how big it was when he see me walk down the aisle she thought I was crazy when I replied and said that he had already seen it! I have seena similar sort of post on WP this morning about brides not wanting there OH's to see the dress and it has made me feel like the odd one out!

Me and my husband have been together since school so he has had years of me telling him exactly what my wedding dress was going to be like, he was also in the shop when I purchased the dress, although he was around the corner. I showed him a picture of it on a model because I didn't want him to think it was a bit too big but he absolutely loved it. He didn't see me in it before our wedding day, but it was on top of our wardrobe in our bedroom for a good few weeks before the wedding so he could have quite easily had a peek, was anyone else in the same situation as me or am I on my own?

    What is an OM?

MY OH and I had been together quite a while when we got married but I got the wedding dress without any information being leaked to him. I didn't want hom to see it before the wedding at all because it was so different to what he would have expected. However the registrar wanted to talk to us beforehand so he saw it before the service which miffed me slightly. But he cried when he saw me ebcasue he was so shocked!

In a way i want to show OH my dress so i know if he likes it or not but then i don't.

I'm thinking of having a birdcage veil so that'll be kept a secret if i do.

I didn't actively show him the dress but the ladies in the shop did! ?

He came in to see our nieces in their bridesmaid dresses and I had mine on so obviously took it off when he showed up later on in the appointment and they carried it out to the waiting area and left it hanging up there whilst uttering the immortal line 'is he allowed to see the dress?' Would he be in the waiting area if so?!

Anyway, it really didn't fuss me hugely (though on the day I was upset and posted about it!), dresses look so different on everybody and off the hanger that he still wouldn't get the full 'impact' until the day.

No mine never saw the dress until I walked towards him down the aisle, he had the shock of his life when I walked down in a Gold dress. He had thought all along it would be Ivory!

Pittabre - Old Married's. The registrar wanted to talk to both of us aswell but she came to us in seperate rooms, I can't believe that happened to you!

*Tinkerbelle* - I was the same, I wanted to share everything with him, so I did! he was there at my hair trial so he knew what my hair was going to be like, and he was also there at my make up trial too. He is my best friend and we do everything together so it didn't feel weird having him there. He had seen my shoes aswell because he had got me them, I really can't think of anything he didn't know! Aww thats lovely that you had a practice dance, I wanted to but he felt too silly!

Grace - He is going to love it because you are going to be wearing it :-)

Raef - Omg I missed that post, I can't believe the women in the shop done that!! What did you say to her when she said is he allowed to see it?

Nope mine never saw until the day. He saw my make up trail and my shoes but that was it, my veil hair trail etc and even my accessories where not shown. He did not even see the colour or the style of the bridesmaid dresses.

I am glad he did not in a way because when he saw me he cried. Or was that with OMG what have I done and can I get out of it ?

Was there a reason why you didn't want him to see the bridesmaid dresses or was it just that it never came up? My husband helped picked the dresses with me, I wouldn't have been able to do it without him! He got quite teary so I had to keep looking away from him because I didn't want him to lose his cool bless him.

Damn its obvious now you say it?

There was a huge push in our area in the time to make sure people were getting married for genuine reasons rather than just for passports<rolleyes>

Really, thats so awful, I would have found it very hard to keep my temper under control!

I don't think I really replied at all. Luckily my brother took him outside after this so he wasn't left staring at it for too long!

The shop were sh!t all ways round anyway. The fudged up the bridesmaid dresses and they turned up the wrong colour, then completely overcharged for alterations, upped the price from the final fitting to the day we picked them up. You could even see where they'd tippexed out the original cost!

Still, my friend got her bridesmaid dresses from there and they hadn't finished the alterations off but they didnt notice until the day so the make up lady was pinning the dresses together on the morning. Have heard nothing but bad reviews of that shop.

No not really I suppose it never really came up. Everything else was done between us, the only things he did not see where everything I was wearing except my shoes which I had to break in. Then what the bridesmaids where wearing.

Hitched helped me loads with things I would never have dreamt of, which I would go home and tell h we would be having

I think it is down to the individual really, I did not keep loads of traditions my mum gave me away. So wanted to keep some things special and a secret

Thats awful! Can't believe they tippexed out the original cost, jammy gits! Our wedding shop was pretty bad too, not sure if you have seen many of our pics on FB but Owen's suit was faaaar too big for him, and my dads, but by the time we found out (stubborn gits wouldnt try them on until the morning of the wedding) it was far too late to do anything about it, the only suit that fitted properly was our best mans. When we told the shop when we took the suits back what had happened they said they were exactly the measurements they should have been, even though Owen's jacket was 2 sizes bigger than what had been arranged, I won't be telling anyone to go there anytime soon!

We ended up with a refund on my nephews suit as it didn't fit properly and ripped when the poor boy sat down!

Oh right, I was just wondering if there was a tradition about them not seeing the bridesmaid dresses that I had missed. I find it so fascinating how everyone does so many things differently on their big day, makes me want to do it all again!

Mine helped pick the dress. He didn't see the final fitting but I really didn't have an issue with it.

Was it something you had spoken about or it just happened? I think I would have been fine with him helping me but he would have been so bored, he's not one for shopping

Mine didn't but we did discuss types of dresses, I am not particulary girly and said to him I was thinking of wearing a black dress to which his response was Nooooooooooooo. I then toyed with red but he said he would prefer more traditional

I remember showing him pics in magazines of diff wedding dresses to see which he said were nice etc but he would give nothing away ha ha

Yes he had seen it. Only because i found it while hepling he's sister look for a dress. I found it decided it was the one i wanted and got him to print it off for me, that was 3 years prior to getting married. It didnt change the way he looked at me when i walked though the door though.

Mine stumbled upon a pic of mine as his mother left the laptop open on a pic of my dress that I had shown her ?

Luckily, as my wedding dress was a bridesmaid dress and the pic he saw was the dress in a colour as opposed to Ivory, he didn't click!

No he know nothing about my dress. I wanted itto be a surprise on the day. I even got it all the way to Cuba without him seeing it and hung it up in PILs room for the week before the wedding.

This has been the hardest thing for me I think - OH wanted a complete surprise - even down to not seeing my shoes or undies. I, however, buy stuff and ask for his opinion straightaway, so I have wanted to make sure he likes hit since I decided on it!

I tried to get him to show me the kind of dresses he liked, but he wouldnt! No point in stressing over it I spose - every time we watch Dont Tell The Bride he tells me that all wedding dresses look the same ? so it probably doesnt matter what I wear at all!

Mine didn't but we did discuss what sort of dresses he liked as I was paranoid he wouldn't like it. I also was a bit vocal when a girl on DTTB had it, he reckons he ran out of the room fast enough not to see it, but he must have had a glimpse. It was very hard for me to keep it secret from him as we do share everything! He did see my shoes, undies and my veil before the big day.
