OM's or anyone who got married in a church....lyrics/copyright issues

bls14, 24 May, 2011 at 16:41 Posted on Planning 0 10

Hi everyone,

so we are having One More step along the world i go as our first hymn. it says on the mychurchwedding website that we have to pay a copyright for this to be printed in our Order of service booklets.

Anybody actually done this? My other half thinks i'm nuts because i said we have to pay it, he just says no one will know!

We have for one of our songs. I emailed them to ask for permission and they said it cost $10, so I just paid it. The other hymn just wanted an acklodgement.

Another good reason to have hymns written by long-dead people!

Our vicar told us that he'd sort all that and it would cost £10 roughly for all copyrights that we would need, if we needed it.

Ok didn't even think about this!!! My Mum has typed up the order of service and put the hymn words in there without either of us even contemplating copyright, oops!! Shall have to check this seeing as the wedding is only 10 n half weeks away and the order of service will be getting printed soon! ?

I thought copyright only applied if you intended making profit. I didn't bother with any of that for my first wedding, but that was 15 years ago.

You could send a note out asking everyone to memorise the words to bypass the copyright issue...

I dont know if things are different in Church of Scotland but our church has a Church Copyright License, our minister told us to add a line at the end "All copyright material used with permission CCL no ............" might be worth while checking with your vicar.

Thanks everyone for your replies on this one. I didn't know anything about it but was looking on the mychurchwedding website where it gives you loads of info. uynderneath some hymns (includign one more step) it says copyright must be got from such and such but its only £10.

it applies to a few of them. Our other is Jerusalem and copyright licence is unknown so dont have to have it for that one.

For the sake of £10 i've just sent it off to get it sorted x

I think in some cases the church will hold the licence to print, cost would be included in your fees.

We didn't have to pay anything and had to send our OOS to the church to be proofed, I am sure the vicar would have told us if we needed to.

Some only require a line to be written crediting the author, others require copyright fees, older ones require nothing.
