On the subject of kitchen design, could I have some opinions please?

RedB, 27 January, 2009 at 10:50 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 7

The kitchens thread yesterday inspired me to get going on my new kitchen design. I think I've decided that I really like cream units with a wood worktop (although having said that last week it was a more modern look I fancied, so things may change!) But I'm struggling with what floor colour we should have. We were originally keen to go with a black and white vinyl tile pattern, which has a sort of slight marbelling effect on the white squares which means that it hides more dirt than a plain black and white tile pattern! And with a toddler and two cats, anything that means I don't need to mop the floor so much is a good thing! But I think white in the flloor and cream units may look a bit odd together. The kitchen planning tools I have used don't have a black and white floor option so its hard to tell what it will look like, so I thought I'd try the wisdom of Hitched and see what you all thought!?

I'm not keen for too dark a floor as its a fairly dark room, so if the black and white won't work, what do I go for?

Any opinions gratefully received!

With cream and wood I would go for a creamy/light brown flooring, or wooden maybe. Not black and white, like you said.

I agree a wood or light biscuit / beige colour floor would work better. Possibly a terracota or warm stone too.

I think the black/marbley white option will work but that KB3's suggestions might work better. HTH.

We have cream coloured cupboards with fairly dark wood worktops and a terracotta tiled floor. The kitchen was in the house when we bought it so it wasn't our choice but I think they work well together. The tiles are very practical from a cleaning point of view but not very forgiven on any dropped glasses or crockery. Unfortunately although I have a piccie of our kitchen (which is the last one on the kitchens thread from yesterday) it doesn't really show the floor, sorry!

We have cream units, dark wood worktops and handles and a terracotta floor- the floor was there originally and tbh we really didn't want the hassle of ripping it up so went with what looked good (we think ?) Photos here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/redhead007/sets/72157604138955838/

I would think a white floor might make the units look dirty with them being cream IYSWIM.

Lovely kitchen Redhead and i love your floor tiles they are a deeper red to ours and look really effective against the cream units.

This is ours......sorry you can't see the floor, apart from a tiny corner just beyond the table ?

We live in a very old granite cottage (hence the wooden beams) which was renovated by the previous owners, the kitchen was built in situ by a carpenter as none of our walls are straight and it suits the house.

RedB, slightly off the original question, when you come to look for flooring, if you want vinyl then have a look at Rhinofloor, it's fab. We chose it because it would have been too expensive and hard to have a ceramic floor. It's really good at hiding the dirt (we have the dark grey/black monument) and is extremely hard wearing but not cold underfoot. Ideal if you have a 2 year old running around the place. They do the monument in a biscuit colour.

Thank you all for your responses. The terracotta tiles do look great with that colour scheme so I will give that some thought. And thanks Sunset for the vinyl link - we do want vinyl ideally because of warmth (or at least not cold) underfoot, plus with a two year old dropping things, it is more forgiving. So I will take a look.
