One space or two after a full stop?

freb2reh, 17 May, 2012 at 09:31 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 75

Ok, I have what may sound like a daft question but I would like to settle a difference of opinion with OH and wondered if any of you had heard of this.

Last night he was reading through an assignment I had typed up and criticized my spacing. His argument was that it should be two spaces after a full stop and one after a comma - fact! (according to him). I have never heard of this practice and have always just inserted one space after a full stop. As far as I am aware it makes no odds when typing in HTML anyway as it auto edits the spacing and removes a double space. I know this is a petty thing but he really needled me because he was so adament that he was right. So, is he right? I hate being wrong but will accept defeat gracefully if that is the case.

People used to leave two spaces after a full stop but it is considered old-fashioned now.

So you're both sort-of right, but he needs to get with the times ?

Traditional typists would put two spaces after a full stop. My secretary, who's in her late 40s, does. I don't.

I was taught to use two spaces after a full stop at school when using a word processor but I don't think it's common any more. I've stopped doing it.

A lot of my barristers leave 2 spaces in their documents. I only leave one in anything I type. I think either is acceptable.

I'm a secretary and I'd only ever put one space after a full stop.

Just spoke to a colleague who is an old school typist and she said it's definitely 2 spaces after a full stop.

You learn something everyday. lol. I've only been a secretary for 10 years....

It's not just old people who use 2 spaces. I'm 23, and I use 2.

This. My OH always tells me it's wrong though but I think it's just a traditional thing that has phased out. I think I'm starting to phase it out though now.

Well he is knocking on a bit 47! Hmm, have I stirred up 'the great full stop controversy'? ?

I suppose it depends who taught you to type. I was taught "one space" by an IT teacher when I was 11. If you were taught by a proper typist, you probably learned the 2 space rule.

Despite being a secretary, I have had absolutely ZERO secretarial training. I have no typing qualifications, do not know shorthand etc. I'm not sure how I've got away with it for so long.

I always use two spaces after a full-stop too. My Mum taught me to type, as she is a "proper" Shorthand Typist (she passed exams in it). She tried to teach me shorthand, but I couldn't grasp it.

I've now been around the office asking!

I'd say it was a fairly even split.

It is technically meant to be 2 spaces after full stops, exclamations, an ellipsis and colons. Word is stupid and always tries to correct grammar and put in unnecessary semi-colons and so on, don't trust it on spaces/capital eithers. I have always been taught to do 2 spaces when typing, but don't bother really. Kids don't get taught to do it nowadays either. We used to do BIT, but now that it is ICT they know how to do fancy powerpoints and web design but they don't know how to create a new paragraph or page section?

One. Never heard of the 2 space thing before.

I am now looking at what everyone types to see how many spaces they use...

    What I have always thought:

If you are using a typewriter, two spaces is normal. This is because an old-fashioned typewriter uses letters that are all the same width (with significant spacing between letters) and, with a single space, you have very little visual clues about the difference between a normal word spacing and spacing between sentences. So people began to insert two spaces.

Now that people use modern word-processing programmes, which are designed to make your text spacing natural (as well as correcting letter widths), double-spacing is now widely considered flat-out wrong, in every publishing form, in every typographer's book of rules.

I was taught that it was 2 spaces after a full stop, and one space after a comma. The version of word that i have still does the capital letter after two spaces. It's actually a second nature thing to me now where i don't even notice that i've put two spaces in.

I wasn't aware that it was an old fashion thing as when i was taught this, i was in my early teens. I might ask around my office to see what the general consenus is too, as it would be interesting to find out if i'm in the minority with this as i am being able to touch type at my "young age"
