Only just thought about post-boxes... Help!

50's pin up bride, 24 June, 2012 at 09:27 Posted on Planning 0 26

So after seeing Lola-Belle's beautiful home-made post box, I've suddenly had an OMG moment as it has never even OCCURRED to me to have one. I've only ever given presents at weddings, with a card attached to the present, so I've never used a post-box... consequently I've never actually noticed if other people have had one.

How necessary is it? We've got a real mix of things on our gift list, mostly actual items but we did stick a bank of £10 ikea and garden centre vouchers on there as well as back ups for people, but I suspect we won't really get vouchers.

Are you having one? What size? What is it made of? Did you make it or buy it? ARGH! (Mind you, if this is the only think I've forgotten with less than 4 weeks to go then I suppose I'm doing ok!)

This is ours (I didn't make it! It will be a bird box after the wedding):

You don't need one, whenever I have been to a wedding without one we all just wonder round with our cards not sure where to leave them. At a wedding last year, we saw three cards on a table to just added ours to that. I was worried to leave it as we had put cash in it. We never got a thank you though so whether they got the money we will never know!! I realise we should have written a cheque now.

Even if it's not a post box, just a basket or something for people I leave their cards in and where they know it's ok to leave them will be useful.

I don't think it is essential really, just a nice extra. As Ducky said, you could even just have a basket with a sign poking out of it saying "Cards", as you have requested physical pressies from your guests, I assume you'll be having a table where they can leave them, so people who have just bought cards (with vouchers/cash) will just leave them alongside the gifts on the table I would say.

Don't panic and as you said with 28 days to go if this is your biggest worry you are doing amazingly well!

This is mine. I bought a plain box, plain letters, painted them and decorated with the ribbon and stickers used for my invites and have a little replica of my flowers on top. IMO you don't need one but I would hate the thought of a card getting lost (I'm a card person and they mean so much to me) so I would have had one even if I knew people were bringing presents, a lot of our guests are giving us spending money for honeymoon so it was really important for us.

They dont take long to do either, you've plenty time if you want to make one.

Ive been having a look myself and I'm thinking of having either:

    - a cheap paper one from eBay and decorating it myself

    Or

    - hiring a proper royal mail one which has been painted (theyre smaller that the ones that are outside!)

My venue asked that we got one so that cards don't go missing. Know of a few people who have given cards with money but the bride and groom never received them...

Got our plain white tall one from ebay. Bit disappointed in quality to be honest and was badly creased but once it's decorated, no one will notice.

We got a surprising amount of card!

We used a bird cage, we were given a couple of cards the day before so we put them in and guests got the idea!

Here is a pic, it is on the right next to our message tree

I'm hoping to find a vintage suitcase for mine.

I think it's definitely handy to have a postbox of some sort,

Hello! It is from a website called Wooden Keepsakes. We loved it. Not too girlie or twee like lots of others we had seen. Sorry the link won't 'link' as I'm on my phone but if you copy and paste it should take you straight to the post boxes:

Hi 50's pin up, that actually took me about 15 mins all from hobby craft the post box itself was £7.00 and then all you have to do is decorate, the letters were from there too so i just painted and stuck them on, got some organza ribbon about a meter and some silver butterflies I has left over from invites.

Really simple, so dont panic ! and im glad you liked it as i wobble everytime i look at it Smiley smile

    xx

I'm not having one as I don't like them, the venue keep insisting that I should have one but they are just not my kind of thing at all. The BM will be in charge of rounding everything up and putting stuff in his room.

Well, not that I'm impatient and impulsive at all (!) but we now have the start of a box, courtesy of a 'quick' (1 hour drive each way - we live in the middle of nowhere!) trip to hobbycraft.

Totally unrelated to this post-box, a while ago we bought some paper mache large 3D letters - our initials - to decorate with buttons. I keep not managing to find the buttons I want at an affordable price (as it's just an 'extra', not an essential) and today while I was avoiding writing school reports, I stumbled across a local arty-crafty workshop place that has these letters. They use a crafting technique 'decopatch' which is essentially glueing small brightly coloured pieces of paper on something, with a combined glue and varnish, to create a shiny finish.

I decided this would be perfect for our letters, and whilse searching for somewhere that stocked the paper, I found hobbycraft also make large paper mache boxes (bigger than a shoe box) so we've bought one of those and are going to decopatch it to match the letters.

Here's an example of a decopatched letter - I hope ours work ok, I'm not exactly crafty!

Well we asked for vouchers, so felt we really needed one. We just got a plain, cheap white box type one from ebay, and have made a card/plaque thing to put on it to match our invites etc. But then I've not really noticed them at wedding before, so not sure how essential they really are.

We have been saying all along that we must get some kind of nice box to keep an example of all of our wedding stationary in, any cards we get, the written RSVPs and any other keep-sakes (spare copy of photo disc etc) so deciding to decorate a plain box for the cards at the actual do works well as we can re-use the box afterwards.

I like the suitcase with 'cards' strung across it - I think I'll try and create a similar inside to the lid of our box.

    Hi,

I just decorated one for my daughter`s wedding. You can buy a flat pack one for about £6 on ebay. you can decorate it as simply or complicated as you want to match your colour theme. Can just tie with ribbon.

    Hope that helps

    Lynne

I nicked an archive box from work, my friend is covering it and decorating it. Nothing that fancy. Only had one to save cards slipping off the table!

LOVE your Mr & Mrs - if I'd discovered this earlier I'd have made ours in a similar way, but we already bought a Mrs & Mrs sign (quite small and boring cream but will look nice on the cake table I suppose!)
