Opening windows - is it only me?

Pookiedoodle, 13 April, 2008 at 11:17 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 34

I have my windows open ALL THE TIME.
Every day of the year.
If it's cold, I have them on the catch, but still open a little bit.
When we're on holiday, I still have them on the catch, but all locked.
My dining room small window is open wide all day, every day - unless it's blowing a blizzard, as are the bedroom windows.
I could never have the bedroom windows closed - how stuffy would that be!
My MIL on the other hand has hers closed all the time - her house is stufy and it stinks!
When I look at the other houses near to me, they all seem to be closed too - is it just me, am I a wierd OCD fresh air person?

    Weird!

we only have our windows open in the summer and even then on a nice day

though occasionally we have our bedroom window open at night (first time this year was the other night but it probably wont be again now for another few weeks)

I don't think its stuffy in here as its not warm enough to be

Do you have your heating on at the same time as the windows are open? Do you not find your heating bills are huge?

the only time the bathroom wndow is shut is when i am in the bath and there is a cold breeze otherwise they are open

i hate stuffy houses and like to be cool rather than too warm

if i told you my winter gas bill you would think we r mental as it was peanuts ?

heating only goes on for 30 in the morning and 30 in the night and the odd time in between if we r really really cold

Our windows are opened every morning and closed after about an hour. The house isn't stuffy at all.

Do you have central heating? Surely you're wasting any heating you have on. I'd be flippin freezing with the windows open all the time.

We always have our bedroom window open when we go to bed. Even in the bitterest winter, it's open a couple of inches.

I couldn't sleep without some fresh air.

We don't have any small windows. ALL of our windows are big door height ones that open like doors, and have no catches, they just swing right back, so they are mostly closed unless it is summer.

The balcony doors can do that thing where they open up at the top but not the bottom, sort of tilting into the room, and are like that most of the time if they aren't open properly.

Over each window we do have a big venty thing, and they are always open, we never, ever close them, so it isn't too stuffy.

I can't stand to have the windows closed, it feels so stuffy, especially when the heating is on, it makes you feel so tired & your nostrils all dry.

My Gran, bless her, is obviously made of sterner stuff than I am as she has the windows open all the time and doesn't have any central heating ?

Her house is like a fricking ice box, we have to wear layers when we go visit.

Here we only open the windows when it's warm and the heating is on for about 4 hours a day at the moment. It's not stuffy at all.

Have I read that right? You have the heating on and the windows open?
Could there be a better way to waste energy?

We always sleep with the bedroom window open, even throughout the winter.

The other windows aren't opened that often, however our house is tiny and I sometimes just leave the back door open and that tends to whaft through the house.

We don't have a window in the bathroom (I hate not having one) otherwise that would be open permanently as well.

Our heating isn't always on, Mainly first thing, and in the evenings, which is when we put the windows on the catch thingy.
Did you have visions of all my windows open and my heating on full?

First thing I do in the morning and the first thing I do when I get in from work. Also have to sleep with a window open too, gets way too stuffy otherwise and I normally wake up with a headache if I don't have it open.

Id love to be able to have windows open and doors open to all the room in our house now and again, but with 2 nosey house cats that want to escape I cant. So I'll open some windows and close the doors to each room to give them an 'airing' now and again.

Our heating is on for 45 mins in the morning and about 3 hours in the evening. Set for between 16 and 18 degrees. The 3ft thick stone walls keep the house cool in summer and warm in winter so we dont feel uncomfortable.

My H doesn't get the opening the windows thing. Mine are usually open in the morning. Then they get closed and we warm the house up if needs be.

The other day he put the heating on in the morning whilst I was airing the place and didn't understand why I shouted at him. He was only wearing his boxer shorts.....

    I don't like a hot house either.

We only have a window open at night - H cannot sleep if it is remotely warm in the room. I am constantly cold so opening other windows isn't really an option. Our heating is nearly always on and is set to about 25 degrees and I still have 2 jumpers on ?

I don't leave windows open, but then I do live in Aberdeen. ? But, I always have a window open at night in our bedroom and usually open other windows for at least half an hour a day. I prefer a cool house to a hot one, as does my H. It does mean though that every time we go to his parents house we die a bit, as they have the heating full blast and the fire on.

I can not sleep with the bedroom window closed. I like to be warm but like to breathe cool air. I'd rather put an extra jumper on than turn the heating up. As soon as I come down in the morning I fling open all the windows and doors. The downstairs windows are closed in the evening.

I think on the whole in this country we keep our houses too warm and I would rather be too cold than too hot.

Well unless your house is hermetically sealed, there will always be movement of air anyway. Doors are opened and closed, some houses have chimneys (ours does), there are drafts around doors and windows. I open my windows when I need to.

If you think the room smells nicer with a permanent draft through it, then whatever suits you obviously. However, the rest of us won't suffer in any way from not 'letting the air in' ?

I like to open the windows once a week, to freshen the air up a little. I should think it makes very little difference, but it makes me feel better, if nothing else. ?

Our house gets very hot in summer, so we tend to leave the windows open as often as possible then as the circulation of air makes such a difference.

In fact, in the heatwave in July 2006, we kept the curtains closed and all windows open all day as it was the only way the house wasn't like an oven. [xx(]

Bedroom window is open every night unless it's snowing - can be open a crack or wide open depending on the wind/temp outside - I like it cool to sleep.

Don't tend to have downstairs windows open that often during the winter unless it's to get rid of cooking smells or it is particularly stuffy, I like the breeze in the spring/summer/autumn though.

I can't sleep with the window open - it just doesn't 'feel' right. I think it would be too noisy, too, on my street.

I'm not in the habit of opening the windows much at all, though I often think I should be. I have noticed that if I air the bedroom for a bit during the day, I do sleep a bit better.

Hmmm, my house doesn't stink yet we rarely have windows open on cold days. If we have even one tiny window open on a cold day the whole house gets the draft as its a small house with open plan downstairs so we have to be quite tight on window opening. Being open plan, when the heating is on, its hard enough to get the whole house warm as it is and it only takes someone knocking on the front door for all the heat to disappear outside and then ages to heat up again (front door opens into living room).

We do have the bathroom window open for about 15 mins or so after we've had a bath/shower though, or if perhaps its a smelly one ? but the bathroom door is always shut when that we do that.

I love however, open windows in the summer. Can't beat that.

Can I just say please don't put your windows on the catch when you're out/on holidays. Someone I know had their house broken into when their windows were on the catch - somehow the burglars managed to get in.

In reply to your question. I only have the little window open at night (whatever the weather). Other windows are only opened if I'm particularly hot or if the room is stuffy.

On a train I always like the window open whatever the weather - so stuffy otherwise and I hate breathing in other people's germs!

My tenants do that and it causes me no end of problems with condensation in the house. It's the worst thing you can do for that - short bursts of heat and then turn it off. If you don't have condensation then no problem .. but I do!

Difference is you open your windows. They don't ☹️!]

Our windows have a small vent at the top which is open, and I find that's enough. In the summer the patio doors are usually open anyway, so no need to open windows.
