Opening windows on public transport

ForTheLoveOfMrsBrown, 17 September, 2012 at 08:59 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 39

Do you do it? Obviously, when it's 40 degrees out, nobody minds. But today, it's a bit chilly yet someone has just opened the train window, such that a freezing cold gale is blowing over me. As I am seated two rows away from the lady who opened it, I can only think she might be slightly puzzled as to why she isn't getting any cooler. She didn't even ask if it was OK to open the window, something I'd always do.

For the 'hot' ladies who like open windows, do you think the 'chilly' ladies need to man up a bit?

Last time I went on a train there were signs on the windows saying DO NOT OPEN THIS WINDOW....they were all open. I'd never open a train window but might do on a bus.

I always open windows on the train and no I don't ask of it's ok. If you don't want to feel the draught don't sit in the line of it. Take a middle seat in a 6 or an aisle seat in a 4.

For me it's not about getting the cool air it's about fresh air on stinky public transport. There is nothing worse in the winter than steamed up windows. Grim.

Maybe she was the same as she clearly hadn't opened the right window to get cool air onto herself!

What I mean FTLOMB is that if open windows are an issue for you then try and choose a seat less likely to feel the breeze.

I wouldn't open or close a window on public transport.

I don't use it enough so don't know the conventions! I'd be terrified of committing some major window faux pas.

If I get on the train and it's sweltering I will open a window but I feel the cold quite a bit and I often end up shivering from a breeze coming from a few seats away. I always carry a scarf for such emergencies! People don't normally ask before opening, I guess because the trains are so busy there's bound to be a difference of opinion so they just do it anyway.

I don't use trains very often, so I'm not sure what I'd do in that situation. If I was really cold as someone else had opened the window I would probably just move, even if I had to stand up.

I use buses more frequently and I do find that they get really hot, so do open windows. However I normally get on the bus near the start of the route, so I'm normally one of only a handful of passengers.

Our trains are normally so crowded (and therefore hot) that the windows are all open. I'm with KB3 on the fresh air on stinky public transport thing!

Hmm, so does feeling hot trump feeling cold? I guess I can see that - if you are too hot, you can feel physically unwell, whereas feeling cold is just annoying (for me, anyway).

Those who open windows because they're hot - why don't you open one two seats away that's actually going to blow on you? Smiley smile

I would just open the closest one to me, probably couldn't move to open any others! I agree that is weird.

I'm a bus driver and I know that most people who get on my bus just haven't got the basic common sense to open a window that will provide them with a breeze. Being hot is harder to deal with than being cold because you can't just start stripping off, but most people lack the common courtesy to think of asking if anyone minds. A lot of my passengers (and ones on the trains) are extremely smelly. I very nearly threw up last night because of one man especially! The non-smelly people have to open the windows to help with the smell and in that situation it's a case of 'screw anyone who's cold'. The needs of the many and all that.

If I can't reach one then I ask over the seats if someone would mind opening the window so we can feel the benefit of it. I've had many a weird look and had to explain the concept.

I'm not backwards in coming forwards though me ?

I am that annoying person. I echo the bit about fresh air, but also I hate being hot. My reasoning is a cold person can wrap up, when you're hot you can't strip off.

I am the person that is always cold and walks around with a scarf on 24/7 for emergencies.

Always doubles up as a wrap around if it gets particularly chilly!

And on that note I am off to close the office window that has been open since 8.30am!

About 19 in London atm, meant to hit 21 which would be nice for lunchtime in the park.

    Yes ?

We do get heating on South West Trains sometimes... which is nice if it's an off-peak service in December, but not really needed most of the rest of the time!

Once we travelled oop north on an air-conditioned train. The air-con broke down and it was a hot day, so everyone got free chilled juice. Good service ? unfortunately I've forgotten who the train operator was!

I love the talk of fresh air to get rid of smells... having the windows open on a bus round here sometimes just increases the fragrance of manure from outdoors

I hate smelly trains and feeling people's breath on me so always rather it was cold - I wouldn't ask if it was ok, I think because I thought everyone felt the same and would be glad of the 'fresh' air...

And KB3 - you are handing into that summer wardrobe for as long as possible aren't you?! 20 degrees means jeans and a elbow length top for me ?

    Maybe that's why I'm always hot ...

BAH...I take issue with those that think hot flushes are just feeling a bit cosily warm for a while. I am in my NINTH year of the blessed things - and believe me when I say they are NO FUN.

It isn't just hot, it's feeling sick and faint and as if you have the worst dose of flu. And at their worst I had them up to 18 times a day.

    Just you wait..... ?

    I'm a window opener.

Our trains have no air con, they are quite and smelly, and at the risk of sounding like a horrible person, there are certain stations we go through where the inhabitants of that particular place don't seem to know the meaning of the word 'deodrant'.

    I'm a bad person.

I'm in the cold camp and I hate it when people do this to me. I understand they want to be cooler, why in that case do they open the window that causes and arctic blast to freeze my face off???

But I'm a bit of a cold nazi, I hate aircon, fans, breezes as well as artic gales. I have a mini hot water bottle that comes with me everyday from about october - march.

To the window-openers: if you opened the window and then noticed the person opposite you put on a coat, hat and gloves, get a red nose and rub their hands together, would you feel bad?

    Nope.

Whose health is more vulnerable? Me being hot, faint, sick. Or a cold person being a bit cold? You'd be hard pushed to catch hypothermia in a packed commuter train into the City.

Maybe they should have separate coaches for hot and cold people. Like the quiet carriages but with windows open.
