Opinions needed please! (same Q posted on Baby Talk, sorry for duplication)

Hi

Right, well, I'm hoping to get some opinions about whether I'm doing the right thing before I do it!

My friend is expecting a baby, due in a few months time. She appears to be pretty organised and have everything she will need sorted out by her relatives but I will obviously be wanting to get something myself. I was wondering what the opinions are from you all regarding birth samplers. For anyone who doesn't know what I mean its basically a cross stitch picture with the name and date of arrival on it.

Does anyone like them or do you all think its a silly idea and I should get her something practical etc?

I personally would like one if my body ever decides to work with me and I'm able to have kids (I digress) but realise that everyone is different and I'm, as one of my friends put it, the oldest 26 year old she knows!!

I don't want to ask her outright as would like it to be a surprise if I do make one. I have found out how the nursery has been decorated and that would allow me to design the picture and get everything but the name and date done in advance... providing I can actually get the design I have in my head down on a chart etc.

Will be grateful for any opinions you have.

Thanks in advance

Amee

Hmm, it's a lovely idea, if it was done to match the nursery then I don't see why it wouldn't be displayed by your friend. I must admit I did think straight off, no way would I put it on a wall but in a nursery, I might.

    Helpful aren't I?

I think it's a nice idea, I would double check the nursery first to make sure it would match!

Although if I'm being totally honest, someone did do one for m me, and it's still on top of F's wardrobe ?

I think its a lovely idea. If it was from a friend and matched the nursery I would love it.

I think it's a nice idea, and something to keep.

Someone made my nephew one and they have it in his play room

thanks for the replies everyone, the general consenus from both here and BT is that it is a good idea so guess I shall have to get cracking on it.

I was doing one for my friends wedding and its still not completed... must must get cracking!

My friend got one of these and she was absolutely chuffed to bits with it. She got loads (and I mean loads) of presents but this is the thing that she would keep getting out to show people.

Its a very thoughtful idea, but totally grim and twee, imo.

Nice idea but a bit old-fashioned. Not for me I don't think.

I agree that it is twee, but the majority of baby gifts are! I wouldn't say grim though, that's a bit harsh.

why harsh? its just a personal opinion. i did say it was thoughtful. if i / we got one of those, the person would be thanked profusely, and it would end up in the shed for 3 years before being being. sorry, thats the reality (for me)

Is there anyway you can sound out your friend? I think its a really thoughtful idea, but it's not the sort of thing I'd particularly want and you can't really pass it on to someone else.

Also if they have more kids in the future, are you going to be able to do the same for them?
