Opinions Please!!

ShootingStar, 18 August, 2008 at 20:04 Posted on Planning 0 19

We are 'discussing' the evening buffet OH wants a cheese platter and our caterer can do this along with serving ham on the bone carved by the chef - this is £4.50 per head. I want bacon butties and they would be £2.50 per head.

What do you think? What would you perfer?

Honestly i would perfere the bacon sarnie , it's a little different but you would have to think about a vegetarian option.

I wanted the bacon buttie option but felt they were overpriced when thats all people would get. Having seen the amount of food eaten in the evening I'm glad I went for more options than just a bacon sarnie.....

I think you need to think about who is coming. I think many people of my parents generation and older would definitely not want a bacon butty and would prefer the cheese platter option. I think younger people may prefer the bacon butties (with veggie option) though personally I would prefer the cheese board (am I getting old ?- don't answer that!?).

Thinking about it, compared with what I'd pay for each in a restaurant/cafe I think the cheese board option is much more reasonably priced.

Also thinking a little deeper, could you negotiate a slightly cheaper price for the cheese board if the ham on the bone was carved in advance and presented carved on a plate for people to serve themselves rather than the chef carving to order?

The cheese platter is our caterer's 'special' he says he loves to do it. He will be there until late anyway as his staff are doing the bar so not having him carve may not save us money. OH says that the cheese option (with olives, sun dried toms, ham and crackers etc) will serve more people than the bacon butties. Think he might be right ......

Lucy - We can't really neg. he is doing a great service as it is and we have been really impressed!!

My brother had bacon butties for his buffet and a small cheese board, the main thing though was the bacon butties, they were ok but not great. Unfortunatly people went over the top and took more than they needed so many people went without which was a shame. This may be because they were being cooked in batches and not being bought out fast enough, when i went there for one all that was left was an empty roll, with no bacon, someone had taken the bacon to fill theres out a little more or didnt want the roll, lol.

The cheese board went down well but not everyone appreciated it, but like i told them, you wont be able to please everyone, you have to do whats right for you and your budget.

Hope that helps in some small way

I don't know what it is with me but when I get an idea in my head I always thing it is the greatest thing since sliced bread .... I have not thought about the fact they might come out in batches and that by having butties not everyone might get one.

OH and I both really enjoy cheese and crackers (hope that doesn't mean we are getting old) but I was worried that it would not please everyone. After everyone's feedback I think it may be the best option - we can still apply the 80% rule (we would have to over order for the butties, we will enjoy it, our caterer has shown us what the table will look like and it is great, my folks and OH folks will enjoy it and I think most of our friends will.

I think the decision may be made ...... OH win's and I dont ..... Nothing new there ? Well apart from our flowers ...... I managed to get my way and am having some pink flowers now!!

Ummm...I would say cheese platter and ham on the bone (with accompaniments)...that would be my choice as it's as heavy or light as you want it to be. That way people can either tuck in or simply nibble and graze. Don't get me wrong I love a bacon butty like the rest of them but they can get cold when catering on masse and not everyone will want them when they are served. Probably confused you even more now!!

Personally I'd go for the cheese board every time. Agree too that it sounds like better value.

When we first decided to get married, we had 2 things clear in our heads that we wanted: a ceilidh and a cheese board

H2b & I are cheese addicts (I openly admit that I am a total cheese snob & love the finest cheese in life) and our friends know that we love cheese & appreciate cheese. Therefore there is only one choice that I would make. ?

However, I have been to a wedding where there were bacon butties served late at night & it was fab.

Go with what you like the best. Your guests will enjoy whatever is there I'm sure

Personally I'd prefer the cheese board and I think thats a fab price for it too! We aren't having one because we were quoted twice that, whereas butties I think that is what you would expect to pay. therefore the cheese board is certainly the better value for money and would be my choice anyway (but then I'm veggie, think veggie sausages are generally rank and can't eat bread!!)

We are having rolls and square sausage, rolls and bacon and assorted sandwiches for £4.50 ph. This way everyone is catering for including veggies as they will have sandwiches for them.
