Ok - I know a lot of people frown upon gift lists on here, but I also know there are a lot of us having them. RIght, I have signed up for a John Lewis one, I know the wedding isn't for ages, but I got stopped at a wedding fair, and ended up doing it. Now, I love John Lewis, but part of me can't help thinking some of their things are a little on the pricey side. I know you get quality, but we are going to be asking for everyday things like new cutlery, plates, mugs etc. Not posh ones for special occasions, just plain ordinary, as nothing we have matches!

It's just the price that keeps making me think twice about doing it. I mean, if all our plates got smashed tonight, I wouldn't go to John Lewis tomorrow to replace them, nor would I go and buy a new kettle from there if that broke. I would probably end up going to Argos or somewhere like that, or even Tesco.

With that in mind, I feel that why should we expect our guests to buy from JL when we cant afford to ourselves. Do I just do an Argos list instead? Part of me (the snobby part) doesnt want Argos, but why not, I shop there myself, so why isn't it good enough for a wedding list?

I also quite like the fact that people actually buy them and take them away and wrap them themselves from Argos (I think that's how it works), and I like the idea of unwrapping the gifts with h2b after the wedding.

What do people think? (On whether JL or Argos, or even Debenhams, not on gift lists in general)

I cant really coment as i havent got a gift list with any of them.

I made my own from lots of different stores using www.marriagegiftlist.com

It meant i could find some really cheap stuff to put in aswel.

I have things on there for under a fiver so that it is affordable for all, and the most expensive was about 80 quid i think.

If all our plates were to have smashed (pre-wedding*), I too would've replaced them at Asda or similar cheap store!

However, we chose things from JL because they are better quality and will last us longer. Yes, some stuff is pricey but we had a huge range, from tea towels at about £3 to a Wii at £179 (put on by H with no expectation and his work bought it for us ?). To me, it was a chance for us to get nicer things than we would be able to buy for ourselves. I've also bought from JL gift lists for people before, and their price ranges have been similar to ours. I was able to buy a simple ceramic roaster for about £6 for someone I didn't know that well (wasn't actually invited to the wedding), but also was able to spend £40 on steak knives for a good friend.

I really liked the service we received there too. We set up the list online and then went into the store to zap things with the palm pilot style thing. We could add stuff online at any time and we also made a second trip when everything was getting bought really fast! Plus free coffee and cake!

People can buy stuff in store if they want, but I loved getting the big delivery too, and as a guest I like to be able to order online and not have to lug a gift to the wedding - ie H's boss bought us a king size duvet, imagine buying that and having to travel for 3 hours with it to the church/reception on what was a boiling hot day! I appreciated not having to pile loads of things into the car after the wedding at the end of the night when I was knackered and not having to unload them all at home the next day! We had a total of 5 giant boxes full and a huge food processor box (we had 70 guests) from our list so imagine trying to deal with all that at the end of the night! I'm pretty sure JL also put in a print out showing who'd bought what and the message they could type in when buying online.

Again as a guest, I prefer using JL because the couple pays for delivery (there are some free slots), when I bought from my friend's Debenhams list they charged something like £3 for delivery (although everything would go to my friend at once) and £3 for gift wrap. Personally, I would rather buy someone a gift from JL because it feels to me just a little more upmarket than Argos, even if they do sell similar things! Sorry, I'm being a shop snob - I regularly visit Primark, QD and the 99p store so I'm not that bad, honest!

    * post-wedding I would replace all my plates from JL because nearly 2 years on we still have masses of vouchers that we received as gifts!

Unforetunately not, the most costly item that was bought off our list was the Le Crueset Casserole dish at around £70. We went back and bought most of the Denby we put on as nobody bought any. We got rid of the mis-matched set we had and now use the denby for day-to-day
