Orchids

Mrs Bass, 16 August, 2014 at 11:08 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 11

E got given one at her naming party a couple of weeks ago and I got given one from work y.day. I really want them to last but I'm not very green fingered and I know orchids need special care. Does any one have any tips or advice on keeping them alive?!

I have no idea about the types, I'll post photos when i get home. They are both fully flowered at the moment and in the kitched, i was thinking of putting them either side of the fireplace (we don't have a fire, just a hole!) our light has a lot of sunlight comming in!

I got bought an orchid like that for my birthday 3 weeks (ish) ago. I didn't even know they had special care...Mine is in my lounge and has been watered twice and is fine and still got flowers coming out on it.

Just stuck mine on the kitchen window sill, watered maybe 4 times since Xmas and has just flowered again on the same stem it flowered on at Xmas. I am the worlds worst plant person so can't be that difficult to care for.

I have the same kind, I have it facing to get the morning sun but only a bit of the midday sun and I basically water it when I remember and spritz the leaves and roots with water every morning. I've had it nearly a year and a half and so far so good. Think I need to re-pot soon as the roots are getting big and will cut back as the 'spikes' are getting really long and look a bit silly, ha.

Also, don't freak out if/when the bottom leaves start dying off, they do that (apparently) but the internet suggest that you just leave them to fall off... (I didn't... oops!)

I killed my first orchid by watering it everyday, but that was because I was using far too much water... I find once a week doesn't hurt and stop over-watering but keep an eye on it when it's hot Smiley smile

I have the same one as you have Mrs Bass, I submerge mine (just the pot) for between 10 minutes and half an hour once a fortnight and its been flowering for about 2 months so far now. Its not in the sunlight, just on the top of a bookcase next to the window on the wall. They're not too easy to kill despite the rumours!

I have a lovely white and pink orchid, no idea what type it is, though. I've had it for about 2 years and water it about once a month but it always flowers! Its seems to be really hardy!

Mine is amazing! It lives on my bedroom windowsill, and gets watered when I remember! It's been there since I moved here 3 and a half years ago!
