Order from Woolies online.....or not?

DeniseM, 22 November, 2008 at 13:01 Posted on Off Topic Posts 0 18

I have a kids birthday party to do in the next couple of weeks and I'm struggling to find all the stuff I need - party bags etc. Woolworths online is cheaper than the other websites I have looked at...but would you order from them at the moment?

We have a Woolworths in town but that doesn't have any of the stuff I have looked at online.

MrM heard a report on the radio this morning that they could be going into administration as early as next week so wwyd?

(If anyone could recommend any other websites that would also be fab)

?

The news report I heard was that they were looking to sell the chain for £1!

Have you tried Matalan - don't know if they do online but in store they do stuff.

Yes, I think they've been struggling for a while now. They've been shutting stores over the past 2 years, and I've heard rumours that our local store is next.It will be a shame if it does go, I like Woolies.

I wouldn't risk ordering stuff online if you've heard they may be going under, although is Woolies a site where they don't charge the card until despatch? If so, that's a bit better I think.

To add, eBay is brilliant for partyware.

Not sure if my husband has made that up as he doesn't want me to spend anymore money Mrs Magic...I can only find info about the sale for £1.

It will be very sad to see Woolies go (if they do) but they are a bit something or nothing these days. I only go in there if I can't find something elsewhere.

Thanks Melawen. Our nearest Matalan is about 20 miles away but could try there next week.

Just found this on their website:

    When will I be charged?

You will be charged only for items that are available for dispatch. The delivery charge is levied on the first dispatch. Once the items have been dispatched, you will receive an email. For further information on delivery times click here.

I wouldn't order from Woolies online. I ordered 3 toys when they were on 3 for 2 offer weeks ago and only one has turned up so far!!!

I'm not worried about the money side of things as I paid by AMEX so will be able to get money back if the order isn't fulfilled, but it is very annoying because I thought I'd got a good deal and was being organised starting to buy some xmas presents.

Emily had her 4th birthday last weekend and as we are quite skint at the mo, I refused to shell out for Dora party accessories and ended up getting table cloths, plates & serviettes from Pound Stretcher. They were actually quite pretty - they had butterflies & things on them, and were very cheap. They did the job brilliantly! I got cheapo party bags from there too and multipack sweets and plastic flutes (parents probably hated me for that!) to go in them. I got 2 CDs for pass the parcel prizes for 99p each in Home Bargains, and most of the party food from Aldi & Home Bargains and a bit from ASDA. So it was cheap & cheerful, but it went down very well and everyone had a fab time!?

Do you have a big Tesco? Ours has loads of bits and pieces for party bags, in the section for party plates, napkins etc.

Personally I wouldn't order anything from them over the internet either, I know there has been alot of talk locally about them going bust/into administration.

Its really sad if it happenes, but I just think with all the other shops, Woolworths isn't what it used to be, it was quite good when we were younger, we'd go there on a Saturday to buy sweets/comics/CDs etc and now there is such a huge range of choice from other shops that I don't think anyone goes there anymore.....I think WHSmith is quite similiar, not going into administration but not what it used to be.

There's a piece onm the bbc website about this. When they started it was 'everything under one roof' which was a new idea and everyone loved it. Now people want specialist shops, and no-one buys singles anymore, so Woolies are a bit stuffed.

I'd be sad to see them go, they're a high-street staple, but they are a bit naff these days and I can't remember last time I bought something rfom there.

If Woolies goes, I can't see WH Smiths being that far behind, they have been struggling for years, haven't they? The problem is these places have no main focus, so what are they FOR?

Im probably wrong but i thought they were selling there stores as they were just going to concentrate on the online side of the buisness!!!Someone told me this the other day but then i read about them selling there stores for a £1!!!

    Im too gullible sometimes ?

Id miss woolies although i dont tend to shop much in there, dont shop much anywhere anymore.Prefer doing it on net.

I agree Lois. I also think WHSmiths have been struggling for years. Again, I can't think of the last time I bought anything from there apart from the odd magazine. I wouldn't go there for stationary, music or books.

WH Smiths annoys me. The book selection is poor - Waterstones is better (and usually cheaper, what with the 3 for 2 deals etc), or Amazon if you have time to order it, the CDs, DVDs and games are dire and really expensive - nowhere near as good as Zavvi, play.com or even Tesco, and everything's all piled up and the aisles are narrow and the whole place is just annoying. And then they have really bizarre offers, where you buy one thing and then can buy something else for such a price; why not just make everything cheaper in the first place? And the prices for confectionary etc at their train station/airport shops just make me plain mad.

Apparently the banks are pulling the rug from under woolies and the "£1" deal, which involved selling off most of the debt as well the stores and restructuring the rest over the two profitable bits of the business may not happen and the whole lot will go under.

I like Woolies and ours is always packed! Trouble is if it goes then so with the clothing range and I always get the children's coats from there as they're half price every now and then. Unfortunately we have no Tesco's, Asda etc to get cheap clothes and other bits from.
